No comment from Queiroz

Queiroz keeps cards close to chest

Manchester United assistant Carlos Queiroz issued a ‘no comment’ when asked if he is being lined up by Portugal as a successor to the Chelsea-bound Luiz Felipe Scolari.

With Portugal’s Euro 2008 campaign having ended prematurely in the quarter finals against Germany on Thursday, the Selecao have turned to the task next in hand of considering candidates to lead the team through qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.

Queiroz is one of the first names being mooted and Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man admits he is flattered to be mentioned.

However the 55-year-old Mozambique-born Portuguese is currently on holiday and does not wish to be drawn on his long-term future.

“It gives me great pleasure that my name is linked,” Queiroz told Correio da Manha.

“Have I been asked? I will make no comment.

“I will not talk about this now as I am on holiday.

You would have hoped that one of Fergie or Queiroz will return to Manchester to have a chat with Ronaldo when he has his operation in a few days. Given the current climate I should think he needs a good talking to sooner rather than later.

If Quieroz leaves and we win nothing next year, the inevitable response will be that somehow he was the brains behind the operation, which of course is just silly. But it will be raised.

Does he have to 'go'

or can he not do both jobs at the same time?

Or is that impractical?

I wouldn't mind seeing Queiroz stay on as assistant manager but I wouldn't mind King Eric as our number two either

I hope that Queiroz doesnt leave us, since we really need him now.

Cantona may have been a great player but he has no coaching experience. I wouldnt mind to see him as assistant Manager at Torquay United but not at our club.

He's not favourite to get the job. That's Zico, and they are considering Rijkaard too I think. +CQ has a history with the Portuguese FA, his last stint as the national team coach didn't end up in happy way for him.

This is why I hate the summer from a Manchester United point of view. There is too much speculation and uncertainty over our players and staff. When pre-season begins, we can start putting the team back together again.

His country isn't calling. Setanta are having a slow news day, figure they'll take a shot in the dark about the Portugal opening. Also, leaving us now vs. then is hardly the same, is it?

Personally I'm not going to give this a second thought until it's more than baseless rumor - the only thing "linking" him to the job is that he is, in fact, Portuguese. We've had quite enough speculation this summer as it is.

Yep as Richter have said his previous stint with the Portuguese didn't end up too well, 14 wins in 31 in matches I believe. They'll go for Zico or Pekerman I think.

I'd rather keep Q than Ronnie to be honest, I think SAF would have a harder job on his hand replacing Carlos and at this stage in Fergie's career he doesn't want to start looking for a new #2 once again.

Feck off. CQ is doing a fecking Ronaldo. These fucking Portuguese are more bother than they are worth. They all want to jump ship. He already fecked off to Madrid once.

Definitely impratical. It would be ok for him to be an assistant at both teams, but he will need to spend a lot of time scouting opponents and his own players in the national team. It just wouldn't work.

Oh come on, any number 2 in the world would jump at the chance to manage Real Madrid, and considering he is Portugese I'm sure he would also love an opportunity to manage his country.

CQ has been instrumental in our recent success, more so than people give him credit for.

When was was linked with Benfica he also refused to say anything, explaining later that he felt it was better to just keep quiet. So it means little.

He despises Scolari.

CQ wants to screw Scolari, I'm sure of it...and with Chelsea a Magic Revolving Door Circus, it would just take one year with United winning the title again (especially if Scolari does ring in the changes - remember Abramovich is thick about football and Mourinho gave him instant success) and he'll be back in South America.

Which navy would that be then Jase?

I think Britain are down to two rowing boats and a much repaired life raft.
