was watching an old game on tv there last week. Couldnt get over how slow Brucie looked. shows how much the game has changed over the last 15 years as i dont think he'd get away with it today. but still he was a great player and leader never shy of putting his head in anywhere, and Big Pally was the perfect partner for him really.

Highly accurate bunch of answers. But no-one has mentioned that Bruce ran like he had no knee caps. Strange running style.

How the feck Bruce never got an England cap is one of those great universal mysteries.
Makes me even more sorry I missed these two (started following the club in 98)

If you guys haven't watched it already and are itching to see dolly and daisy in action (plus the rest of the lads in fergie's first masterclass team), watch the first of the videos in the other thread:

Man Utd - Barca '91

You can watch the full game - That team, was really, quite bloody fantastic - i never watched that game before this (I never had the luxury of live games back then), but watching it now is great joy.

Wonder how the likes of Bruce and Pallister would handle the Premiership today.

That was class. I remember Fergie celebrating the goals, he was up in the stand at Anfield and nearly fell off the top tier in shock when Pally got both goals!

Pallister was definitely a technically better defender, one of the best at the time, but Bruce was a true leader, a real inspiration. Together they had all the qualities needed to make a rock solid partnership.

Rio & Vidic is probably the closest we've had to it since - long may it continue! [touch wood]

A bit more about the two for our 'younger' readers

Steve Bruce

Gary Pallister

They were a duo. Can't really say one was better than the other. Pally though was terrific value. Paid £2.3 million for him in 1989, get nine years fantastic service, then sell him for £2 million. Fantastic. As has been mentioned earlier, his tackle against Juve in 1997 was awesome.

I think Bruce would be too slow, at least for us with the way we set up.
Hyypia plays OK for Liverpool and he's slow as feck.

I remember a game in his least season for us, the commentator burst out: "Bruce' being outpaced by the ref!"

Pally would be immense even today.
