Plans "in place" for Fergie retirement.

Taken from the same interview that our vice chairman has given. I have no link as I saw it on the tele.

Does this mean someone's been approached if something is "in place"? Or they already have a shortlist?

Discuss...

Stands to reason that we would have a plan for the succession.

I suspect that it is more along the lines of a regularly updated short list and resources we would be willing to commit to securing their signature.

Sir Alex will likely go on short notice and i doubt that the secret could be kept all that long, difficult to approach people in that sort of environment.

He's a right bearer of bad news isn't he? Comes along and tell us the Glazers will be here for years to come, and that SAF's on his way out!

Don't get me wrong, it should be viewed positively that a successor has been lined up, but you don't do these sort of things five years in advance do you?

They should make an X-Factor type show, though based mostly around Football Manager records.

If this is actually the case, I fear it may be his last season. I thought it would be 3 or 4 years away.

It would be about right, bowing out with Giggs and Scholes.

The exact same thoughts popped into my head when I read this. Scary, isn't it? I thought Fergie would be here for at least for 2 more seasons after this. I am searching for the context under which he has made these revelations. Haven't been able to find anything yet. Does anyone have an idea?

Here's what was said:

Quote:
But with Sir Alex Ferguson turning 70, thoughts have begun to turn to who could eventually succeed the Scot.

Woodward makes it clear that while the effect on the business and the desire to maintain United's legacy of success has crossed their minds, there's no sign that Britain's most successful ever manager is ready to move on.

"We have a view as to what that process [appointing a new manager] will look like in terms of finding a replacement and what type of manager we want and how and when we'll go about it.

"But it's in the drawer and long may it stay in the drawer."

Anything could happen to Fergie in the near future so it makes sense to have plans in place even if he's not planning on retiring at the end of the season or next.

And like Nick said he'd probably be retiring at short notice rather than saying he's going to retire in advance.

True. I've always thought it would be health that would suddenly dictate our need for a new manager and not a decision made of Fergie's free will.

Cheeers Bot.

That sounds a bit more positive. Like I said before I heard this news I was thinking 3 or 4 years.

He wants that 3rd UCL trophy to cement his name in the history books.

SAF will make his decision in time to arrange for his successor to seamlessly slot in, it'll just be kept quiet until the last minute to avoid any affect on the team etc.
