Queiroz considering £1.5m / year offer for Portugal job.

By Ian Ladyman
2nd July 2008

Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz was last night weighing up a £1.5million-a-year offer to become coach of Portugal.

Officials of the Portuguese Football Federation were in Manchester last night and reports in Lisbon claimed Queiroz has accepted the post.

Those reports remain unconfirmed but the offer to Queiroz is concrete and the highly-rated coach must now decide whether to stay at Old Trafford or take control of his own national side in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson credits his assistant with guiding the club to last season's successes in the Barclays Premier League and the Champions League and will instruct his board to do everything they can to keep Queiroz.

But Queiroz, who was born in the then-Portuguese colony of Mozambique, will certainly be tempted by the chance to become his own boss once again for the first time since his ill-fated year in charge of Real Madrid in 2003-04.

Except they will probably go after Zico, he hasn't resigned from Fenerbahce post without a reason and honestly, I cannot come up with a better reason than taking Portugal job.

If it is true, United can offer Carlos Queiroz more than that to stay.

The Portugal job will be up for grabs again... he'll only be offered the top job at United once.

Managing your country is quite a big draw as well to be honest. No gaurantee he will get the oppurtunity again.

But historically the Portugal job has been up for grabs way more than the United job has over the years. He'll only get offered the United job once if at all.

Is this not just the papers running out of Ronaldo stories to beat United with, so they've moved on to Queiroz?

When those rumours get quashed it'll be Rooney and Rio falling out over the wedding and being unable to ever work with one another again.

To be fair it was always his dream and the train only passes once (very strange train I know). Queiroz's mum likes the idea too.

I don't think it would be bad for United if he accepts the post. He will lead Portugal to South Africa in 2010, and gain a lot of experience from it. After WC 2010, Ferguson will be that bit closer to retirement, CQ will be that much more experienced, and hence that better prepared for the managing post at Old Trafford. What do you think?

It is not entirely about loyalty. He might want to gain some first hand coaching experience as a head coach, acheive something, prove that he is more of a worthy successor to SAF when he eventually tires. Remember, world cup is only 2 years away, which I am sure SAF will not have retired yet.

News flash: Queiroz has spoken

According to Balague Guillem, a well respected Spanish journalist who specializes in English and football affairs as well as Hollywood and Bollywood nitty-gritty gossips.

His sauce, Tamari, a well-known in the world of Macrobiotics, a favourite of Queiroz, has told Balague what it heard in the kitchen when Queiroz mumbled to himself over his dilemma.

More explosive revelations of the slurred speech will be reported on Balague's website in two to three days time.

Well, Quieroz is Portuguese, isn't he?

To be fair, if the offer is too good to turn down, then why not? If I were in his shoes, I'd take it, even though as a fan I hope he tells them to fuck off. I imagine it's less hectic than having to show up at 7am everyday for the training session, the pay is much better, and you get to lead your country into a major tournament. The ugly side is that the whole country's eyes are upon you, but that could be a good thing if you are successful.

What do you seriously expect ?

CQ is Portugese, he's just a number 2 at a club. Now he has the chance to manage his country national team. God who wouldn't consider the chance.

Dunga's position as Brazil manager isn't that secure at this point in time

If Queroz leaves then we just have to find an adequate and experienced replacement.

I reckon Fergie would promote from within.

Meulensteen maybe or if I was a betting man I'd say there was something in us bringing Bryan Robson back to the club as an "ambassador".

CQ has been brilliant as part of a team with SAF, imo, and allegedly has a lot of influence over the coaching side of things (training, tactics etc). The SAF role is so completely different that I'm not sure anyone could do it, and if it was CQ who would he bring in to do his current job? Maybe the whole system will have to change. "Director of Football...??" God, NO! Can't we inject SAF with some miracle drug to keep him going full strength for another 50 years?

Very bad news for United if he decides to leave. Couldn't blame him in the slightest if he did go though.
