Sounds like a great top three asset manager list.

Well done Spoons. I bet The Chief would never have managed that.

Fergie Lines Up Controversial Queiroz Replacement

Sir Alex Ferguson appears resigned to losing assistant manager Carlos Quieroz and is lining up a controversial replacement in the shape of Pako Ayesteran, claims the Daily Telegraph.

Fergie Lines Up Controversial Queiroz Replacement

Quieroz, who is in his second stint at United, has reportedly been in negotiations with the Portuguese FA and is widely tipped to be named as Luiz Felipe Scolari’s replacement as the national side’s coach shortly.

According to the paper Ferguson is considering replacing Quieroz with Pako Ayesteran in a move that may surprise many at Old Trafford, considering Aysteran’s links with United’s bitter rivals Liverpool.

Aysteran spent three years as Rafael Benitez’s number two at Anfield but left the job last season to take over at Benfica. He has a long history with the Liverpool boss however, having worked with him at Valencia and Tenerife and could be attracted to a return to the Premier League.

Whilst Aysteran might be able to provide Ferguson with some insider knowledge of how Benitez works it is uncertain as to how the Manchester United fans would react to a former Liverpool man joining the club.

The Telegraph also reports on a number of other options should Quieroz leave Old Trafford this summer. Other candidates reportedly include former United players Laurent Blanc and Brian McClair, and United development coach Rene Meulensteen.

Although this is 99% likely to be bullshit, this wouldn't be the worst idea

It's not as if we need any inside info on them anyway though, they're just too easy.

United admit defeat as Queiroz prepares to exit
Daniel Taylor and Stuart James The Guardian, Thursday July 10, 2008

Manchester United will receive around £1m in compensation after reluctantly informing Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant, Carlos Queiroz, that he is free to leave the club and replace Luiz Felipe Scolari as Portugal's coach.

The deal was hammered out last night by United's chief executive, David Gill, and the president of the Portuguese football federation, Gilberto Madail, after Queiroz rejected a pay rise at Old Trafford and made it clear he could not turn down the chance to take Portugal to the next World Cup.

Queiroz, who has agreed a four-year contract, has been in Lisbon finalising the arrangements but is expected to fly to Manchester today to complete the formalities and say his goodbyes to the staff.

His departure presents Ferguson with an unwanted problem ahead of the forthcoming season, not least because Queiroz was supposed to play a major part in persuading Cristiano Ronaldo to resist Real Madrid's advances. Ferguson hopes to appoint a replacement before the start of the season, the likelihood being that he will headhunt someone from outside.

Don't they just love all this? The difference with Queiroz leaving this time is the 4 year National contract which will give him time. When he went to Real, I believe Fergie's view was that he wouldn't hack it and he carried on, prepared to make do that season, in this belief. Events proved him right and leads to the view that CQ is not the best choice for our future manager and I also believe that CQ would stay if it was stated that he would become the next manager. Fergie and the club wont do that as they have reservations. No question of his coaching ability but serious questions of his management ability.

However I also believe that Ronnie and Nani will be in safe hands when they join the Portuguese camp, unlike Scolari.

Real setback to our pre season schedule.Looks like it could be McClair to step up as No2 for the time being.

It is really some bad luck. In Queiroz's position as an assistant to SAF (and in a frame to replace him) there are only two jobs which are impossible for him to turn down. To be the manager of Real Madrid or Portugal. Unfortunately both jobs were offered to him during his spell with us. Maybe he will return for the third time as Terminator did.

Roy Keane has only got twelve months left on his contract at Sunderland. Sir Alex`s perfect replacement in waiting could be the ideal assistant for the next two years or so until taking over. It wouldn`t be a step down for Roy to become no.2 at OT rather than no.1 with Sunderland.

It would be a step down for Keano expecially if he is not guaranteed that he will take SAF's place in the near future.

I remember 2-3 years ago when we won shit, CQ was blamed, he is a good coach, but as a manager he fell on his face in Madrid(as many would and have tbf), that said those people who would chose him over Ronaldo are completely deluded

And we're not Sunderland. The next no.2 will have to have a 'network' and coaching experiences in different leagues. I'd be surprised to find someone English or even British/Irish. As good as Keane may or may not be at this level, he doesn't have either of the above.

I guess it would be Rene Meulensteen doing the job. He could even become the permanent replacement IMO.

He would have been crazy to turn down this job unless we were promising him the manager position after Fergie left. The fact is no one will remember CQ when the success of this team is talked about in coming decades, it will be known as Fergie's team. Where he will be the main man for the Portugal NT.

Carlos is our assistant who's not british or irish . The fact is, we'll do well with any decent assistant manager as long as Fergie is incharge. I'd be very happy if Mcclaren returns.
