Rio Ferdinand - Hero

I've been so tired of all the bullshit surrounding Ronaldo lately, we've not had as much chance as we should have to bask in the glory of an unbelievable season! I have however just been brought back to wonderful reality by bumping into Rio! I went out for a few beers with my brother for his birthday, and on the way home bumped into Señor Ferdinand! He was really friendly and indulged us in our sycophantic banter, as well as an autograph! You can tell that Rio absolutely loves the club, he's pretty much signed himself up for life. I think he looks at people like Scholesy, Giggsy and Gary from Bury and wants to follow suit. Same thing can be said for another 'always' red, once formerly a blue, and I think for quite a few other members of the current squad (Carrick + Hargreaves for example). I am quite evidently rather inebriated, but for everyone who like me has become slightly disillusioned with a player to whom we have given so much love, just remember that there are many more who truly deserve and appreciate their wearing of the shirt, which is worth more than any trophies or stepovers! If he stays, kiss my face. If he goes, he's given us 5 years of great memories, and there are others beside him who truly embody the United spirit. (N.B I have also come to the conclusion that I do still love that Portuguese C*nt, and finally that I should avoid mixing substances with trying to get 'deep' about something I care about so much!) Thanks for reading.

It's really funny actually. Couple of seasons ago, Rio was the cunt and represented everything wrong with the football, still is unpopular with some of FCUM crowd. Now the new hero. Shows the fickleness of football fans I suppose.

Well said about his signing up for life! A truly United player.

But I can't understand how you still love someone who has shown all those disrespect towards us! If he goes, we won't lament one bit!

I don't think it's an exaggeration to state that he could get into any team in the world at this moment in time. Usually I am quite reserved when hyping up our own players, but he, along with Evra and Ronaldo, is up there with the very best in football in his position. To be honest, I couldn't care less if he is an arse off the pitch, I am only concerned with what he is doing on it, and in that sense he has been magnificent this season. He deserves the captaincy full-time.

I agree, if he leaves I don't think I'll be as upset as I thought I would be even two months ago. Although I will always have feelings for him, and could never bring myself to see him through the eyes of, for example, a disgusting verminous Scouse bastard. I don't think he needs to be putting us through what he has done, especially after the years of loyal support we have shown to him. Why now and not in a couple of years!? But I agree with the idea that he won't have grown up thinking of United as the biggest club in the world, and for someone who clearly thrives upon being the best player in the world (as well as his Iberian ties) Madrid is the natural option for him. He will regret the move, there's no doubt about that, but I can sort of understand his mindframe, and to be honest am just happy to have the likes of Wayne and Rio at the club who you can tell are absolutely in love with the club just as much as we are in love with them! Also on an unrelated issue (after having read the Kerlon thread), why on earth was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqeXX...eature=related ever frowned upon? If he has that sort of skill available to him, then that is the best way to be able to maintain posession in a difficult situation.

I wouldn't swap Rio for anyone in the world, and that includes Ronaldo.

can you imagine the outrage from l'Arse and their mates in the press if a player of ours performed like that against them? Poor sensitive little tarts would need counselling for distress at the psychological damage such "showboating" would cause

Is it fickleness, or are 2 years a long time in the playing career of a footballer?

Things change.

It's a joy to watch Rio play

Just to see the ecstasy on his face when United score is a sight in it self.

He made mistakes, it seems he has been in correction mode since, and looks to have suceeded.

Next United captain - Stating the obvious.

rio is the most important player on our team and has been for years now.

A hero is someone who does do any wrong? i certainly don't consider Rio as a Hero, but he has turned out absolutely class in last 2 seasons.

He has taken the responsibility of organising back four. He has really impressed everyone with his performance.

On his way to become hero. Couple of EPl & UCL titles could be the start.

For what it's worth, good that he feels a sense of belonging at OT. Long may it continue.

Man if someone had said Rio for skipper few years back you would have been slaughtered. Dont you feel stupid/angry when the fickleness of fans is so blatantly exposed?

Just shows how all players can make mistakes. Hell even Scholes refused to play a cup game once.

Another reason is that he changed alot in the last couple of years, no more crap stories around him, it was just about Rio and his performances on the pitch. Became a true professional and I think he's not just a brilliant player, but also a worthy captain.

There has also been an undeniable change in Rio, both on and off the pitch. Fans can definitely be fickle, but the change in their attitude can also be in no small part attributed to Ferdinand's play, leadership, and maturity.

Rio is a top class player and would walk into every international team. He really is world class and that label is used far, far too often. Him and Ronnie really are a bar above the rest of our squad at the momment.

I expect Rooney to finally join them at the top though next season, as long as he doesn't have an early injury he'll be in fine form for us.

Rio really showed his worth the last couple of seasons. I never rated him that highly when he first came but will gladlyhold my hands up and say i was wrong as he has been exceptional recently.

however this doesnt excuse him for acting the complete cunt a few years ago and holding the club to randsom, even after the club supported him throughout his in-descression.

Great player - yes

Hero - No way

He should be made full time Captain. I don't think I can pay the guy a bigger compliment then that. As Sults said, it's a joy to watch him, and for me, he is without question, the best defender in the world.

Not quite a hero yet but well on the way to becoming one,a few blips earlier on in his Utd career but he has shown all the doubters what he is all about.I would not swap him for any player in the world right now as i am a firm beleiver that a defender is every bit as important as a forward, after all a last ditch tackle to stop a certain goal or a goal line clearance is just as important as actually scoring at the other end.

Yeah, that sticks in my throat actually when I go to FCUM. Bad form.

The moment he headed in that last minute winner against Liverpool I thought he'd done enough to redress the balance. Since then he's been magnificant.

Ferdinand has been immense for 2 seasons now. We signed him for £29.1 million but if you look at the service we will have received for that then it is money well spent. You have to pay top dollar for the best players in their respective positions and he is certainly that.

It has taken a while, but people do not even seem to throw the "lack of concentration" argument around anymore. That and the fact that people have finally opened their eyes and realised that he is twice the player Braveheart Terry will ever be.

I think he reveled in the role as captain last season and if Neville does not make regular appearances from here on in then Ferdinand should be made on field captain.

And as for the FCUM crowd who still castigate him - who gives a feck? It's just typical of their holier than thou attitude.

Fuck it. He's by far the best defender on the planet, and probably the best i've seen play for United.

What does piss me off is when people completely miss the point in regar
