Rio out for 6 weeks
Ferdinand ruled out for six weeks
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has lost his battle with a back problem and will be sidelined for up to six weeks. Ferdinand will sit out Sunday's Premier League showdown at Stamford Bridge and Red Devils team-mate Wes Brown admitted that the 30-year-old has tried to play through the pain for months. Brown said: "He's been getting a lot of pain for a long time so he's sorting it out now." The England international has come under fire recently for numerous poor performances. Brown added: "When he comes back he'll be a lot stronger. "If you're not fit and want to play it's very hard. Believe me."

The mail is one of the worst papers out there, just stop reading it and the pain will go away
![]() This is bad news though, his injuries are a real problem and he never seems to be fully 100% fit, there is always something there which with back trouble like his is difficult to see an end of. |

Could be a good thing, if it means he's out for 6 weeks now and then this back problem is behind him and he can focus on finding his best form without any setbacks.
It's better if he's out 6 weeks now and fit for the rest of the season than if he misses every other game because of it. |

Im all for doing whatever it takes to try and clear the problem completely. We will just have to make do without Rio because its important that he is available later on during the season. We need him back to full fitness in the near future and so do England.
Its up to Vidic, Evans, Brown and O'Shea now. |

Fergie: Docs yet to find cure for Rio
Rio Ferdinand is facing an extended period on the sidelines as Manchester United try to get to the bottom of his latest injury concern. Ferdinand has already been ruled out of Sunday's Premier League showdown with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after failing to recover from a calf injury that has been plaguing him for a couple of weeks. However, Sir Alex Ferguson now fears the injury may be related to a lower back complaint. "There has been no improvement," said the United boss. "We are having to look at something different because usually you are back from a calf injury within two or three weeks. "But there is no sign of recovery from this injury so we are looking at whether it is to do with his lower back." Not looking good for Rio.It may be longer than 6 weeks. |

Bad news, but he's hardly been outstanding recently, good chance for Evans to stake his claim.

Out for 6 weeks eh?
That's quite impressive - I once went out for 3 days, but I was so knackered, hung-over and smelly by the end of that I had to go home and sleep for a long time. That's not true. The mail is the worst paper out there. |

Spot on. He's been excellent for the past two seasons. A 21 year old defender not looking out of place in one of the world's strongest sides, and indeed shining against the likes of Chelsea and Inter Milan. If anything he's underrated.

His weakest display IMO was against CSKA (which is shitty timing) but he's amazingly consistent for one so young. |

It's looking more and more like we need a replacement for Rio. Not a permanent one - he still has several years ahead of him. I wonder if we will get someone through the ranks or go into the transfer market.
I don't see Evans as a replacement for anyone. To be he is a first team player already. But I do believe we need one more quality center back. Any ideas about who would fit the bill? |

This:
Is an example of this: I'm a big fan of Evans, and wouldn't have any other player soming through and startgin to stake his claim to a slot in our defence. But he is very much still jong and lenin, and at present Wes Brown is a much better defender than him. And ironically, Barnsely was a fine case in point - Wes was our best defender. |

I think we're bringing back Rio too soon which has caused this. We brought him back too quickly to face City and he ended up making a mistake, but cos of the injury he was holding, he couldnt even get back properly. I thought at the time he shouldnt have played against Liverpool.
Thankfully with Evans and Brown and if needed OShea we are covered. Id rather he get it sorted out and come back ready for the important part after Xmas. |
