Rio's number one

RIO Ferdinand is now the No 1 defender on the planet.

That is the view of his United team-mate Michael Carrick, who is convinced that the England centre half would have been voted Footballer of the Year but for the stunning success of Reds team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick said: "Rio has been immense all season. There are games that stand out - Liverpool at Anfield in the league, and the away matches in Europe against Barcelona and Roma.

"He has been awesome. Not much gets past him and it's a great comfort for a midfielder like myself to have a player that good backing you up.

"His performances are consistently at a high standard. The thing is, he's getting better. Being made England captain and taking the armband in some United games has given him a boost.

"This season he's probably proved he's the best defender in the world.

"I didn't choose Rio, however, in the PFA awards I picked Ronny because he scored a hatful of goals and so many were important.

"A winger getting 42 goals is hard to ignore.

"He'll get praise from all angles, and rightly so, but Rio has been unbelievable and defenders often get overlooked.

"The back line as a whole has been magnificent and Rio has been a big part of that.

"In any other year, Rio would have been Player of the Year."

Stating the obvious. Rio is the best defender in the world. This season he's kept the mistakes down to an almost sick low level. Yet there are idiots who believe there are players like Nesta, Canavaro and Puyol who are better, eventhough they fuck up almost every day.

Carrick is absolutely spot on. At this moment in time, Rio Ferdinand is the best defender in the world by a country mile

Apart from the age issue if I had to choose losing Rio or Ronaldo I'd lose Ronaldo. We'd miss Rio much more so OK go and slag me off I don't care

I was hoping this was something to do with Rio's fledgling hip-hop career, but sadly not.

I would think Ronaldo would be harder to replace. We'll find out soon enough, because both will need to be replaced in the near future I would think.

Both are pretty much irreplaceable, but I would say there are more able replacements at centre back than on the wings at this moment in time.

Agreed. but the thing is, is that outside united no one else would say hes the best (when he clearly is) its one of those cases where the few are right and the rest are wrong.
Rio doesnt get the credit he deserves, if ronaldo hadnt won it rio wouldnt have got it, although carricks right rio deserved it after ronaldo.

Like torres saying that carvalho is the worlds best.
although his opinion doesnt mean much, coming from the pocket of rio ferdinand.

Rio won't need replacing anytime soon trust me, I wouldn't be surprised to see him still playing at the highest level at 35 and beyond. Oh and I agree with Carrick, Rio was probably our most consistent performer last season, was immense.
