Ronaldo: I deserve the Ballon d'Or

Cristiano Ronaldo, the Manchester United winger, thinks he deserves to be named both the European and World Player of the Year.

The Portugal international is favourite to win both the Ballon d'Or and Fifa's World Player of the Year award after scoring 42 goals last season and helped United to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

"I feel calm," he said. "Two or three others deserve the Ballon d'Or. But if you evaluate what each one did over the course of the season I believe I did more than everyone else. What else do I have to do to win the Ballon d'Or and Fifa award?"

The Ballon d'Or is voted for by 96 journalists from around the world, while the Fifa award is voted for by international coaches and captains.

Ronaldo added that he is looking for more success with United. "Until now no team has retained the Champions League," he said. "That has to change, it could happen this time. Manchester United have the potential to do it again."

Correct me if I'm wrong but has any United player ever smiled when they're subbed?

EDIT: Excluding Dwight Yorke, he will probably smile when his doctor tells him he's got cancer.

The quality and/or clarity of my jokes tonight may or may not be affected by my blood alcohol level.

I know that feeling. I find the higher the blood alcohol level the higher the quality and clarity of my jokes.

To me anyway.

The opposite is usually true to whoever has to listen to them.

I once made an absolutely brilliant joke when I was dead drunk, and didn't even realize it was brilliant (or a joke) until I sobered up. I think it was about carnivores and plankton.

He deserves both. After all, they are not personality awards but football awards.

I am much funnier when I am drunk but I also step over the line not infrequently and wake up cringing. Its OK as long as I am with close friends but if I am out with work or peripheral people they sometimes dont know when I am being tongue in cheek.

Oh, I know that feeling. Waking up in horror, after a work night out thinking, "Sweet jesus, did I really tell the Sarah Palin joke? Noooooooo!!"

I had one horror incident about ten years ago at a work Xmas party. The details shall forever remain unspoken by me. Since then I've been careful not to go beyond the point of no return. Easier said than done though.

He's right he should win it. But does he really need to campaign for himself?

I think it'd be a farce if he didn't win it. At the same time, football is a team game, I don't really care all that much about individual awards. But for the efforts of his team mates, he wouldn't be winning anything

He recieved the true recognition of his achievements at the end of last season. A league and European cup medal which I'm sure is taking pride of place in his growing trophy cabinet

The thing is, he has a good point when he says "What else do I have to do to win the Ballon d'Or and Fifa award?".

Ronaldo's season was nothing short of remarkable and really every player dreams of winning the Ballon d'or. Berbatov said a few months ago, that he wouldn't retire from football a completely happy man unless he won the Ballon d'or, so Ronaldo is probably thinking if he doesn't win it now after having such a fantastic season, he may never win it. Now or never in other words.

Ronaldo said he deserves to win the Ballon D'or and he's right. People need to realise that he's probably thinking its now or never. If he can't win it after the season he has just had, when can he?

If you offered Berbatov the European Cup or a personal accolade, I'm pretty sure I know what he'd snap my hand off for

I understand what Ronaldo's saying, I just don't see why it needs to be said! Barring an unlikely, utter farce, he will win it. The only possible competition I see he can have is from a Spanish playing from Euro 2008, or at a mighty stretch Arsharvin. And realistically none of them have done anything near enough to oust him. And I don't think that'll be lost on the voters

Complain about it after if you're robbed, but there's something a little graceless about speaking about it like this for my money. But I hope he does win it, because he deserves to this time

He obviously got asked a question directly about it shown by the simple response "I feel calm,".

He then went on to say "Two or three others deserve the Ballon d'Or."

It's not like he's going around saying "I'm fantastic".

I wonder if he is worrying that there will be a systemic bias against him because he plays in England?

True. Although, one thing I will say is they are quotes without the question asked. We don't know what he was asked, it could have been 'why do you deserve to win the Ballon d'or over anybody else'
Obviously, he was delighed with a European Cup winners medal and judging by his quotes wants us to go all the way again this season but there is no harm in wanting an award which he deserves. Naturally, he would be pissed of if someone else wins it, I would be if I was him to

That's fair enough Red, we don't know the context of the question. Many folk with a bit more humility would have been diplomatic enough to be graceful whatever the question was though. Extreme example, what do you reckon Scholes would say to the question you guessed at?

A mild frustration of Ronaldos game, which is clearly present in his personality. He's good enough to be the best without the nonsense

Being as successful on the international level is the only thing else he could do
but a lot of that depends on the rest of the Portugal team too

If Keane had been asked about such an award after we won the Treble he'd of said he couldn't care less if he won it. I prefer that sort of attitude.

Give him both trophies

Then see if his hunger still exists. If not, sell him for 100 mil
Then let him live off his past glories at Real or wherever

Ronaldo is arrogant. But don't see much wrong with what he's said here.

Journo asks 'Who deserves the Ballon D'Or?', what else can he say?

It would be sort of fun if he didn`t win wouldn`t it?

Personally I couldn`t care less about the award. He was the best player in 2007-2008, but he doesn`t have to say that himself.
