170k a week sounds about right for Rooneys next deal. He is the best player in the premiership IMO and he is totally committed to United.

Next they nee to reward Fletcher and make him one of the top paid midfielders.

I think he will certainly get a contract that is up there with the highest paid players in the league, not sure if that amounts to that figure or not though.

Isnt close to being the best player in the Premiership. Isn't even among the top 3 players on just our team this season.

The hype surrounding him makes him the biggest star in the Premiership and he may deserve top wages because of commercial reasons.

Who is the highest paid player at the club at present? Rio? How large a leap would this deal represent, hypothetically?

WTF has this season got to do with anything ?

Based on his age, skill level, commitment and love for the club I rate him above any other player in the Premiership. IMO

If he's totally committed why should be piss away over £2.5m a year to pay him some more?

Hm, so quite a leap then. Although that deal was signed a couple of years ago and those players held in the highest regard at other European clubs [which is good] are a bit better paid than ours at present but even so...

Of course if we were to wait and Rooney had a storming World Cup [which i dearly hope], there might be a further £10-20,000/week on top of the aforementioned figure.

The ante was raised last summer and the salaries of the top players jumped. Also, the rise in tax rates next year will mean the best players will probably seek more money.

BTW - I can remember when Bryan Robson signed a 100k a year contract and fans were up in arms.....times change.

Now you have changed your tune from 'He is the best player in the Premiership' to the above. You don't seem to even understand the simple statement that you posted earlier.

Based on his age, skill level, commitment and love for the club, Everton fans a few years ago rated him above any other player in the Premiership too. Didn't deserve the highest wage in the league then and doesn't now either for any footballing reasons.

You may need to dumb it down for mjs to understand. Posts like these would hurt his head. He doesn't seem to even understand what he posts.

Ah yes, the higher tax rate. Mind you this will be somewhat negated if the Spanish based players lose their cushy little arrangment they have going at the minute.

It's not desirable but considering the footballing world we live in and particularly when you dine at the top table, such things must be tolerated i guess. If he stays with us for many years yet and at his next negotiation decides to tread water or accept a cut on account of his age, it appears in a better light. Time will tell.

The greater trouble will come when we sign our next high profile player rather than from those already at the club i think. And we'll do well with Evans on course to be a long term fixture, home grown talent often have lesser demands in this area.

IK and his "love" for English players..sometimes wonder why he even supports an English club.

Think we all know Rooney is probably overrated in the grand scheme of things but to say he isn't the best player at the club is just silly. Deserves to be paid the most at the club and seeing as we're the best in the land for now, the rest is inconsequential.

WTF are you talking about my statement is the same. Rooney is the best player in the premiership, period. Just to quantify that for you: No one in the premier league has more commitment, passion and overall impact on their team than he does. He is also one of the most technically gifted players in world football as well.

They already did. Pretty sure the "Beckham Law" that excepted footballers from paying high taxes has recently been repealed. They'll pay 43% now, much like the Premiership's players.

Poor bastards.

Whats he on now?

He should get at a max £120-130k...nothing more.

How much do Ronaldo, Kaka and Messi get per week?

Ronaldo is on about £250k a week

Rooney at £170k isnt that much when you compare that Adebayor is getting £150k a week at City & Rooney is a much better and versatile player than good ol' gangly legs

The difference with Ronaldo (not sure about Kaka and Messi) is that his wage agreement stipulates net pay, so if that tax law has changed in Spain it's the club who will be hit with a massive bill not Ronaldo with a pay cut.

I think Rooney is possibly the most influential player in our squad and deserves an increase, but I'm not comfortable with £170k a week, it will increase the base level of negotiations for everybody else.

Also Ronaldo's salaries rises each year so he is on around $500k a week in the final year of his contract.

Spanish teams usually negotiate net pay deals with foreign players so it's the clubs that notice the tax rate.

For United, I think the management will argue that Rooney is a special case - as well as being a special player on the pitch (and young enough to be even better), people like Nike value him very highly off it.

I understand the reasoning behind a large pay deal, I just think that with our financial position it wouldn't be particularly prudent to increase a players wage by such a large amount. If we are looking to bring in any big names any time soon their bargaining position will be increase by the wages we are already paying.

Give Rooney 170k a week now and anybody coming in in the future will want similar.

The bargaining position at the very top is being determined by clubs like Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea (and once they get some cash, the Italians). I'll ignore City because the big names usually want the big clubs or at least "guaranteed" CL football.
