Look carefully and you will see it wasnt the worlds greatest freekick bar that the rest of his game was sensational that night but the freekick was poor and the wall was even poorer

Awesome night, so out of this world to get a hattrick of such class in a debut lin Europe!

Ruud's goal was the best that night though...great ball to him...excellent control...SMASH!

I watched that last night too. I was surprised how little I had remembered of it. I do remember him ripping his shirt just before the match and having to change at half time. Even though he scored two goals I reckon Ferguson still told him off.

Our midfield did surprise me. I had forgotten how poor it could be (with the exception of Giggs of course who is always quality).

He's a different kind of player. As Ekeke said, he used to be an impact player. A more normal kind of forward. Whereas now he plays a much more creative role, and his aggresiveness and impact is more an extra bonus.

It's one reason I want to see Anderson pushed up in a more attacking role with Rooney on the left of a 4-2-3-1. Anderson can then do most of the playmaking and creativity in that forward role, and Rooney can focus more on unleashing his explosiveness and drive, with his creativity the bonus. If we got Berbatov to play upfront that could also help, as it would be another player who would often play in Rooney, instead of it always being the other way around.

The problem is that I think Rooney enjoys playing the more creative role more as it allows him to see more of the ball and dictate our play. He just has to find that right balance.

I remember he scored one with the left foot and then one with the right. When he was standing over the freekick it was just ineveitable that it would go in. awesome!

As you said earlier. It's all due to being too selfless for his own good. I get the feeling from him taht he is fashioning himself after Roy Keane. Yet Roy Keane was never a forward, so his extreme selflessness made sense in the position he played. Rooney' work s against hm at times. As does his really poor decision making when trying to finish. Which makes his finishing erratic

You are dead wrong. He is a far more dangerous player. Far more likely to do damage with his team play. The only thing holding him back now is his lack of consistency with his finshing

Dude, It's not a problem and he has found the right balance already. I mean, remember his monster performances against Liverpool at OT in the league and Newcastle home and away withotus coringas muchas he should? All he lacks currently is consistent finshing. That is why when he has just okay days, like must players do from tiem to time, his finishing lets him down and people **** he isn't being great. Yet he is almost always our main creative hub with Scholes. Regardless of where we place him on pitch. Yet alongside Ronaldo he is always our main attacking threat in and around the goal area.

It always amazes me how people don't realise how phenomenal a player Rooney has actually become since we first signed him & how much better he can and will get.

Rooney hasnt developed as well as we wanted him. Mind he is still a great forward but considering his talent, he should have become a much more effective player then he is right now. In my opinion this boils down to two factors.

A) Our inability in providing him a quality finisher who would have allowed Rooney to play in his natural role

B) Rooney's mania in dropping too deep and concentrate in winning the ball rather then in going in the right places to score goals.

If Ronaldo goes, I believe we will see the real Wayne Rooney again, the Wayne Rooney of 2004. Explosive, fearless, impact.

His contribution hasnt declined since then, but IMO his presence has been subdued.

Do you seriously think that all he is missing is his finishing??

Do you not see the difference between him in his first couple of seasons and now, where he seems apprehensive to dribble and doesn't explode past people and unleash deadly shots?

There has been a definite decline in these aspects to his game which he became famous for. He has improved in areas and lost in others. Im not sure it has been for the better. I want a mix of the both.

This is the Rooney I miss. Yes he's better now, but strangely I still think he's capable of all the things we see above. I don't think he's lost that much pace, at least not enough to negate his dynamism, but he just seems so unsure of himself now. He just needs to find himself again then we'll see the best of him. I still think he'll end up being better than Ronaldo.
100% accurate, i wonder if he knows it?

even in that video you can see what is missing from his game, he doesnt beat men anymore, dribble and explode past people its pretty much faded from his game. he needs it back seriously, that is a sight that used to make me so happy.

seriously what the fuck happened to that wayne rooney?

Don't get me wrong he is still a quality player but I'm surprised that he became more reserved, after his debut i thought that we had the makings of a prolific goal scorer, hopefully with ronaldo out for a while rooney will take his place as the best player in our team and start being more selfish for fuck sake.

I think a lot of it could be due to ronaldos drive in the team and rooney takes a back seat and maybe doesnt feel he needs to take on that same individual responsibility to take the games to opponents himself
