you can't really count nevland, he was only brought in as a youth player.

best 5 in no particular order

schmeichel
cantona
solskjaer
irwin
keane

worst 5

veron
taibi
goram (what the fuck was that all about?!?)
blanc (i think he wrecked our defense for a season and a half)
prunier (although highly amusing to watch a defender scared to head the ball, proof alone that eric will never make a manager)

Possibly, like Prunier was brought in as cover on trial

Reckon maybe Taibi or Bosnich could be in there in place of Nevland

I assume you folks are quite young or you wouldnt have missed Ralph Milne,Mike Phelan,Viv Anderson or Jim Leighton as worst signings.

I think Drifter had it right with his 5 best signings, the basis of our first great title winnig side under Fergie.

The rumour that I heard about Nevland, was that we had paid near enough £1m in a donation to his side as he was playing for a amatuer club when he came over. Of course he never got his chance and this was pure rumour.

As for signings,

BEST

1) Schmeicel
2) Cantona
3) Irwin
4) Ole
5) Keane

WORST
1) Milne
2) Webb
3) Taibi
4) Donaghy
5) Leighton

Again, i think people miss the point with 'the worst signings' bit. Neil webb played 3 times for us before he was injured, come back 3 stone overweight and never being the same player as he was at Forest. Mal Donaghy was a steady, reliable defender in a poor team at the time. Bad signings are the panic buys fergie made to get a quick fix to a problem.

Worst signing ever? Bellion IMO. Knows how to run like the wind, nothing else.

Guiliano Maiorana. Saw him play at OT once and he was appalling. No idea where he went after that.

Guiliano Maiorana, brought in from non-league football, and after one promising display failed to live up to the management's expectations. This was around the time that Shapre had broken through into the first team, and was playing his best football.

Maiorana, ended quiting football through injury. He suffered a really bad knee injury, I presume it was a cruciate injury, but it was enough to put him out of football for a year or two. He did try a comeback, but that floundered very quickly.

At the time he wasn't a great player, but he wasn't that bad of a player. I wouldn't put him down on my worst players list.

As for Webb, it wasn't just the performance on the pitch that puts him in the bad books, but his attitude as well. That what made him a bad buy. As for Mal Donkey, he wasn't as good as Ashley Grimes!!! Even Graham Hogg was more cultured than him....

Funny how everyone names Veron in their 'Worst' list

It was a different story on here when he played for us

Then he was a genius.......

in CL games anyhow

You have to take the amount paid into account. If we got him for peanuts, he wouldn't be on that list at all.

As for worst buy, I'm surprised that tit Poborsky isn't on more lists and people are being a bit harsh on Jim Leighton.

The best buys are alright, although a mention to Lee Sharpe who hardly cost a penny (well £150,000 or so). Pity the way he ended up, but it was money well spent.

Taking performances into account he should still be on everyones list no matter if he cost $3.57

I agree with that. Come to think of it, 'best/worst signings' is a crappy thread title. Every player signs whether he cost money or not.
Who started such a woolly thread?

Jesus, that's a blast from the past! Didn't he play against Arsenal and play pretty well at one point? Or am I just making this up?

Anyway.

Best in no order:

Cantona
Schmeichel
Irwin
OGS
Keane
(Honourable mention to McClair)

Worst, in no order:

Ralphie Milne
Andy Goram
Gobshite Viv Anderson
Poborsky (really bought on the strength of a decent tournament and a great goal)
Jim Leighton

Mine's based on value/lack of it for transfer fee paid & for the opportunities given:

BEST:

Cantona
Schmeichel
Keane
Ole
Irwin

WORST:

Veron
Forlan
Donaghy
Wallace
Webb

Rio is still with the club & has time to salvage himself, or else he'd be amongst the worst, based on his performances, & lack of, so far!

I think u all missed out our 2 CBs. Pally from Middlesborough & Bruce who wanted to crawl from Norwich.

P/s:I thought Jordi was ok seriously. scored a handful of goals whenever he played but fergie never gave him an extended run in the first 11
