Smalling Chooses ‘Biggest Club In The World’ Over Arsenal

After having their first bid rejected and United having their offer accepted, Arsenal put in a second bid to Fulham which was accepted. Arsene Wenger was a big fan of the young Fulham defender and was doing all he could to lure him to Arsenal.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson met the player in London on Tuesday night after Fulham’s defeat to Spurs and that was all that was needed to get the deal sorted. Smalling is an Arsenal fan but chose to join United because we’re ‘the biggest club in the world’.

“My time at Fulham has been great and I have learned a lot about the game from Roy Hodgson and the coaching staff,” said Smalling. “But the chance of coming to the biggest club in the world is something I just couldn’t turn down. I’m excited about working with Sir Alex and the fantastic players in the squad. I’ve played a few times in the Europa League this year, but the thought of making the step up to the Champions League next year is great. I can’t wait.”

Cheers BahamaRed, nice read that. Refreshing to hear about a footballer with an education.

I've only seen him against Chelsea, but from what I've read about him he sounds like a Rio clone on the field. If that's accurate then this is a bargain ala Vidic and Evra.

He's shit!

But seriously, he's got years to learning top level football ahead of him. Letting him play out this season with Fulham was certainly the right thing to do.

Yeah because if he isn't good enough now he'll never be good enough!!!

I think Fergie is more interested in Villa to be honest. We play them in a week and a half, and again in the CC Final.

Yeah. Wouldn't you know it, they had a dip in form after they beat us, and now they're getting back in form again!

And Fulham have really dropped off since they beat us!

We'll end up doing a Ljajic and cancel the deal.

I take it he's having a bad game then?

Wouldn't surprise me, Villa with their constant crossing and the pace of Agbonlahor will make even more experienced defenders look silly. He's only 20, and he had great games against Tottenham and Chelsea so one bad game does not a bad player make.

Ahem Smalling cost £12 miillion, so he's proven to be worth £5 million, not bad for a young player of his inexperience.

Smalling hasn't cost £12m, if the reports are correct then he could cost up to £12m, but that will be due to a number of specific milestones achieved.

Agbonlahor just eased him out the way, too strong for him, wasn't a "mistake" though.

TBF the man at fault for both Villa's goals was Hangeland, what the fuck was he doing with trying to let the ball run ? He also got turned inside out by Agbonlahor and caught completely the wrong side while Agbonlahor finished.

Knives away for another week.

Haven't seen the match actually, but sometimes I watch an old match of us playing West Ham when Rio was there. There were times you wondered if he's actually a defender, because of some really basic errors.

20 is nothing for a center back, the fact that he is even playing at this level at his age shows he has something about him. It also shows the same thing for Johnny Evans, we might be blessed with two top defenders in the next 3-4 years.

I really can't believe people. The guy is 20 years old for fucks sake!!

If we'd just signed a 25 year old Nesta and he was making these kind of errors then I'd be worried. But the fact is the boy is still learning his trade and playing against top tier premiership opposition. In 2 or 3 years he'll be one hell of a player mark my words. People need to get some perspective.

Rio at west ham aged 20 was a twat and made many the mistake, his choice of pass was especially infuriating.

Smalling seems to be a very grounded lad which will aid his development as will making mistakes

Well that's good for when he actually does make one then

Today certainly wasn't a mistake by him, Hangeland left Fulham's defense in the shit twice, I would put both goals being down to his carelessness.

Smalling needing to hit the weights at his age sounds about right.

Don't know what happened Hangeland, he's not had a great season in comparison to last year's.

Do we want Smalling to educate himself with terrible errors and become a more experienced player, or do we want him to lay low and possibly help Fulham overtake the resurgent Liverpool side but have to "educate" himself at United.

Tough call.

Agbonglahor always seems to be scoring headers against our defenders.. I would put that down to his strengths rather than our weakness..

Footballers are weirds.

Ramsey was a united fan so he signed for arsenal
terry was a united fan, given the opportunity to sign but signed for chelsea
smallings an arsenal fan but turned them down for us.....

Rio was making mistakes at 20. Smalling will too. As long as it's for fulham and not for us it don't matter. He'll learn from them and hopefully our coaches will push him on quicker when he's here.

There's an old adage in football " don't sign for a club just because you support them". It's about what's best for your development.

Terry would have stood a fair chance at United and Smallings at Arsenal (they're so despirate they had to re-sign campbell). He would have got games. Weird football
