But there's a subtle difference between people who have acknowledged that he's a good footballer, who needs to get back to his best, when he didn't perform as well as he can, on one hand.

And the mob that wanted him jettisoned, on the other.

"He's only recently picked up form", is not much of an argument for the latter.

Indeed. Not least because it's factually incorrect. He's been arguably our most consistently effective player since the beginning of November, four months ago.

Carrick was playing well in a lot of games last season and getting the usual abuse on here regardless. He seemed to get the blame for the shape and approach we took in games last season, despite him often being the one actually holding things together.

Thought he started this season quite poorly, but it was still a case of one good game followed by a bad one, rather than him just being continiously hopeless as seemed to be the popular belief.

He's been fantastic for a few months now though. Our best player consistency wise and probably the best he's played for us apart from maybe his first season.

I hope his return doesn't push Pogba down the pecking order, which would probably lead to a transfer in the summer.

I think Pogba will stay. It's a matter of working out things with his agent which I think will eventually be resolved. As long as he gets the odd cameo, that should be enough. He's on the fringes of being established in the first team and he knows that. I dont see why he'd want to leave if he's close to making a name for himself. I dont think he'll have to wait that long either. It's not the same as Ravel's situation.

Also Pogba is appearing for the first team bench on a much more regular basis. He may well have appeared against chelsea if it were not for us getting back into the game, if we were three down with 15 mins left then Ferguson may have been tempted to bring him on.

He is so close to making it here that any move away just doesn't make sense. City have more options than us in midfield, a move to Italy would be counter intuitive as they don't really utilise youth over there and anyone like arsenal would be a step backwards with no guarantee of regular games.

Who can he actually buy? I can't think of anybody. Not that I know anything outside of Premier League.
I can only foresee us not signing a CM if Scholes and/or Giggs play on for another and Fletcher comes back free from illness.

Even if Scholes and Giggs retire,I dont foresee us buying this summer, if Cleverley and co step up; and if Pogba is given playing time, he will grab the opportunity, and that could make things more exciting next season.

doesn't mean he will though - on the other hand wouldn't surprise if he started him. As usual, expect the unexpected. I know that's a load of nowt but that's Fergie these days.

I can see him replacing Scholes after 60 or 70 mins or so, no matter of the score

All of a sudden our midfield looks decent. Potential to look world class if Cleverley, and Pogba fulfil their vast potential, and Carrick maintains his form.

Good news.

People need to remind that he is a still relatively inexperienced young lad with potential, not the saviour.

This is what I want too, but it's a newish system for us at the moment in what will be a difficult game to try it out. That saying though I can see Cleverly starting. Oh I don't know, just can't wait for the game now.
