Too right.

How about looking at the average no. of goals conceded by sides outside the top six? Would be interested to see that. Admittedly not as interested as in whipping boys.

I was hoping you wouldn't say that.

That's a whole lot of maths, right there.

Over to you, Brwned, you students have feck all to do all day and you're as fond of stats as I am.

Time to step up, redcafe needs you...

He'll be delighted. He hasn't won the Golden Butt since he shared it with Jonathan Pryce in '81.

I've got 4 hours of doing nothing so yeah I can take a bit out of my day to do that.

09/10 - 1.5 goals conceded (on average per game for each team outside the top 6).
08/09 - 1.4
07/08 - 1.5
06/07 - 1.4
05/06 - 1.4

Here's it fixed up with a bit more detail:

(Total goals conceded by bottom 14 teams, average goals conceded by bottom 14 in entire season, average goals per game conceded by bottom 14)

09/10 - 526, 38, 1.5
08/09 - 745, 53, 1.4
07/08 - 811, 57, 1.5
06/07 - 728, 52, 1.4
05/06 - 752, 54, 1.4

How'd you get the "total" and "entire" season figures from 09/10 with only 25 games played? I figured the only useful stat was goals per game.

I figured it was pretty obvious that it wasn't at all useful for this season since it's only 2/3 of the way in, but served a purpose for looking at previous seasons anyway to see how the stats vary in greater detail since it's difficult to see any difference when there's only .1 of a difference between 5 seasons.

My bad.

I'm not having a go! Just curious.

Thanks for the number crunching. Especially seeing as it seems to support what I was saying a while back

I think thats sums it up.

There are about 10 shit teams in the league this season. Then you have teams like City who cant defend and let us score 4.

I remember Everton at home this season. They were absolutely rubbish (mainly due to having a lot of injuries). We didnt play well, yet we scored 3 past them.

10 goals in 2 games against Wigan have helped. As has 9 against Portsmouth and 7 against Hull.

Carrick & Fletch seem to be chipping with the goals this season.

Your right, some teams are not parking the bus. Like Hull away - they give us a tougher game than in previous seasons, but they leave themselves more open.

Ah, well you could estimate based on the trend shown this season i.e. if the goals were going to flow at the same rate as they have this season those two stats would be a total of 800 goals and 57 goals per team - more than in any season besides 07/08.

excellent thread - very odd though

Can only go along with Brwned's suggestion that it's down to Sir Alex's genius. The rest all flows from that. Despite all the raving about Rooney, he has been in and out of form until his recent flush and the defence has been decimated like never before.

It'll make it all the better if we win another title or at least a CL after being written off yet again.

Perhaps we had the best backup in the league, and seeing much of the campaign decided by having a good backup along the way (see Liverpool), meaning we get more stabil run over period of time.

Maybe, to be honest, the answer would be simply our players have find their form again (Carrick, Nani, Scholes, even Giggs), and having Ronaldo for a while made us forget we were good even before him.

Chelsea is on pace for 88 points. United around 85. Arsenal 75. Shitty 68. Liverpool 67. Tottenham 66 Aston Villa 65. I think the league has been tough. At this pace United will have to average 2.5 points per game (33 more points in the 13 matches remaining)for the rest of the season to lift the title.
