Ronney out wide is not crazy...neither is him playing in midfield with Scholes and Carrick.

Agree!! Get out the blocks early at them, they shit a brick in the FA Cup!

He often does, as a deep playmaker who can shut down City's defensive midfielders.

I expect Valencia to play, due to his discipline down the flanks, perhaps even Giggs down the left flank.

But Welbeck up top is a must, if he can link with Rooney like they did against Everton.

I wouldn't start with Giggs and Scholes - one or t'other only, and hope to God we don't sit the back four as deep as we did v Everton

Just think Fergie may surprise and play Nani on the right and Giggs on the left.

Valencia to come on later in the game.

Nani, Valencia and Rooney is clearly the best counter attacking front three. Round pegs in round holes.

How will city line-up?

If they flood the midfield United will have a hard time, but I assume United are going to play a counter-attacking game anyway.

DDG

Smalling
Rio
Evans
Evra

Valencia
Carrick
Scholes
Cleveley/Park
Nani

Rooney

I would be fairly confident if we line up like this. I keep wondering whether it would be a good idea to have Welbeck playing, as I know he would be dangerous but I'm thinking that tactically we may be better off flooding the midfield. I'm not a huge fan of Rooney up top on his own so it would rely on Clevs/Park making sure they get close to him when we are in possession. Wide positions are where we can really do the damage

Our team in the 6-1, for what it's worth

DDG
Smalling Evans Rio Evra
Nani Anderson Fletcher Young
Welbeck Rooney

Obviously we'll have a completely different, and probably (hopefully) much better central midfield. Can't remember Smalling having a great time at right back that day, from memory 2 of their goals came from that side. Didn't even realise Welbeck played to be fair although Rooney was as ineffective that day. I'd feel much more confident with 3 in the middle.

I think 3 in midfield - with Cleverley included in the lineup - is definitely the way to start. We could really use the energy of Cleverley in the middle.

4-4-2 and we lose. I would bet my life on it.

4-3-3 with Rooney, Nani and Valencia as the front three. Carrick, Scholes and Clev in midfield

You could play Welbeck, Rooney and Nani as the front three as those three would be able to to interchange positions. Valencia is a great impact substitute against tired legs too.

Welbeck is as comfortable wide as he is down the middle. Plus add to that what he, Nani and Rooney did to Everton. I'd have them in a front 3 against our next opponents. With Valencia to maltreat a tired fullback off the bench.

city will come at us at the beginning - I think we need to have a solid start and after 15/20 mins it will be easier

it simply has to be 4-3-3 for me

we've had all week to plan for this - we'll be fine

I really dont see why we should do anything different from the other games we've played them in this season. Even in the 6-1 game, we dominated them for about 35 minutes. Go with the good and trusted 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 with Rooney in behind Welbeck and let him drop to the left if we need another man in midfield.

i just think we need to control the game rather than try and out play them

we have shipped goals all season at times - would be silly to leave ourselves exposed

we don't necessarily need to win the game so it would be more sensible to keep it tight and protect the back 4

we have with Nani/Valencia/Rooney in a front 3 we'd have enough to cause them problems as well

we can always go to a 4-4-2 if needed

I'd have to agree with you there. Man City have got the momentum here, however with some of the talk in this thread you would think that we're coming up against Barcelona in this game. It will be difficult and I am worried that City could outplay us, but I think we're just asking for them to do so if we go out, change our formation and play a cautious, tentative 4-5-1 formation against them. I would take a draw from this game if we could get one, but that doesn't mean we should just play for the draw. We have to look at trying to get a win.

We play our best football when we line up in a 4-4-2 and it gets the most out of Rooney. Seems a no brainer to me, don't understand the obsession with 4-5-1

We were crap against them in the charity sheild until they scored twice and we changed to a more attacking team.

At OT we dominated them until we went down to 10 men and in the FA cup even prior to them going down to 10 we were the better team.

Trying to sit deep and defend with our available back 4 will only lead to defeat, so we have no option but to attack.

We have handed the momentum to City so the opening 20 mins are going to be crucial.
