I am sick of people saying that Madrid play their football in permanent sunshine. In fact the climate in Madrid is colder than here in winter due to its high altitude. Granted spring comes early with very pleasant weather but by June the heat is unbearable and everyone deserts the city whenever they can. Its not the utopia its made out to be .

I find people who deliberately refer to the weakest parts of subject (Park, Brown, Fletcher) instead of the best very punchable.

Thing is all three played well last season, further highlighting the spasticity of the article's author.

We're one of the biggest clubs in the world, nowhere near the biggest I'm afraid.

agree with the first part but who apart from madrid can actually compete with us.

The top clubs in the world are like the top 4 in england after the top 4 there is a huge drop off. But in reality There are only 2 in this discussion and its Us and Madrid. The greatest player in the world currently plays for one of them and the other wants him. He would not go to any of the other clubs you mentioned it would be a huge step down.

Certainly other clubs have won as many or more European Cups but they pale in comparison to the global phenomenom that United is.

Take the blinders off mate for better or worse united is either 1 or 1a in this debate.

The point still stands.

We as fans suffer from delusions of grandeur, we're not the biggest club in the world AC or Real hold that title (depending on who you talk to), and will do for a while to come.

Which is why big fish (real) can come in and take smaller fishes (us) biggest names when they please. Becks '03 Ruud '06

Being known as the biggest club in the world doesn't enhance nor dour my enjoyment of this football club I love and support, it shouldn't for you either.
mate, now that part is just rubbish. both had massive fallouts with SAF and were fucked off to Madrid. & you've missed one other important factor about Madrid that makes it so appealing - the weather and culture.

I've been to Madrid, its fucking amazing, who wouldn't want to live there. Especially if 1 of the biggest clubs in the world is there. that we can compete at all with them given we are in rainy, dreary North England is pretty amazing.

Not a lot of football to be played in June though. Not in Madrid anyway.

Bullshit, in all the 50 years I've watched football Chelsea have never had great support. They would be behind United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, Spurs, Leeds to name a few. United have always been at least in the top 3 best supported teams in England and among the best supported in the world.

That surge of emotion which courses through people when “Swing Low” echoes from the stands as England face Scotland at Twickenham or the electrifying buzz as the All Blacks go into the Hakka, the thrill of watching Ali and Frazier toe to toe even after all these years has not diminished and for scale the superbowl, the world series and at the very pinnacle, the Olympics are sights to behold and can trigger emotions which stay with people for years.

If a survey were to be held however, it would inevitably be football which provoked the strongest emotions and affected the greatest number of people most deeply. No other sport can entrance the same number of people week in week out as football and as a spectacle dedicated to only one sport, the World Cup must stand as the highlight of the world sporting calendar. Football can justly claim to be the first truly global sport with almost every nation fielding an international team and huge armies of supporters watching more live and televised football than any other sport.

And if the beautiful game can claim to be the foremost sport then there is only one team who can rightfully claim their seat at the head of the table. More column inches worldwide than any other, headliners on the front and back pages, riches beyond the dreams of world sport and a fan base which covers the entire globe. For all the great individual teams who have come and gone, the great teams of Real Madrid, Juventus, Ajax, Liverpool and Celtic, one football club stands head and shoulders above the rest.

From their lowly beginnings as Newton Heath in 1878 to the dominance of United in the Sky era, Manchester United have always best defined the highs and lows of football. From the ruins of the stadium after it was bombed in WWII to the glory of Edwards, Taylor, Charlton, Foulkes et al and the tragedy of Munich. The remarkable rebuilding of the club and the superstar era of Best and Law with Sir Matt realizing his dream of European glory 10 years after fate had robbed him of a team. The ignominy of the 70’s and 80’s left fans living on their dreams and memories until Alex Ferguson finally managed to fill Sir Matt’s shoes and brought unknown levels of success to the club, possibly even surpassing the Busby babes on the 26th of May 1999 by lifting the Treble of League, FA Cup and European Cup.

The drama that runs through United’s history People stand up in their droves just because they hate them, they ruined poor old Colin Shindler’s life and love them or hate them, they are the first result everyone checks for. Manchester United are football, win or lose, they always play in the same cavalier fashion which thrust them into the public conciuosness in the 50s and 60s and their history is tinged with a drama that is the stuff of legends and at times reads more like Roy of the Rovers than reality. Had you not lived it you would swear this was the work of some Hollywood screenwriter. The tongue in cheek pride with which the club have rebranded their stadium “The Theatre of Dreams” speaks volumes about both the history of the club and also the aspirations of every player who pulls on the red shirt and every fan who wants to.
It was true when I wrote it for Wibbs as a header page for ToD and it's still true to this day. The reason Real Madrid coveted Beckham and Ruud and covet Ronaldo now is that they are desperate to be Manchester United. Trophies are a convenient measure of success but United are about so much more than just success and that's why we are loved (and equally hated) the world over, ambivalence is not an option where we are concerned.

Try telling someone from the other side of the world that you live in Madrid or Barcelona and you are as likely to hear about architecture or weather as you are football. Tell them you're from Manchester and even if the guys a Mongolian goat herder you can pretty much guarantee the next word out of his mouth will be United, Best, Law, Cantona, Charlton, Beckham, Giggs, Ronaldo etc.

even if we accept that they are a bigger club (which they are not - our turnover and profit will leave them behind again) it's only because their comical running of their club is always subsidised by their government. United have long been bigger earners than them - only during their "galactico" phase, (subsidised by their local government buying their training ground from them and then giving it back to them) where they have been able to buy some of the world's top players on the strength of that, have they earned more, because of the shirt sales bearing the names of those players. Leave them to stand on their own two feet and there'd be half a dozen clubs bigger than Madrid. btw, they are 160m in debt now.... and please try to refrain from reminding me of the debt that was inflicted upon us by outside forces.

maybe its when i started following football, but i really don't think much of madrid.

for me, i've always admired (in terms of big clubs, in europe): barca, juve, milan, bayern munich. (no particular order)
