Thought for the day: United, you're not as big as you think
Manchester United trumpet themselves as the biggest club in the world.
This week they are finding out they are anything but. Any way you want to look at it, they are in Real Madrid's shadow. In terms of prestige, global power, European Cups, league titles...you name it. Cristiano Ronaldo knows it. Which is exactly why he's kicking at the emergency exit door at Old Trafford. United had a good season, but they got lucky in Europe and only won the Premier League because Chelsea shot themselves in the foot so many times last season. Ronaldo can make himself a better footballer, and a wealthier individual, by leaving United for a bigger club. Just as Michael Carrick improved his lot by leaving West Ham for Fergie. As did Rio Ferdinand by moving from Leeds. Big clubs feed on the better players of smaller clubs. That's what Real Madrid are now doing with Manchester United. Fergie can have the biggest strop of all time, he can scream himself redder than he's ever coloured his cheeks before, but it won't make any difference. The choice in front of Ronaldo is another season bullying flat-footed English defenders alongside the likes of Wes Brown, Darren Fletcher and Ji-sung Park in the Manchester rain or showing off his skills in the sunshine of Madrid in a team of superstars. Bit of a no-brainer, really. United, you're not quite as big as you think. http://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/sp...ted.4210393.jp ![]() ![]() |

terrible article, but in one of the press conferences (the one where fergie is swigging on a glass of white), fergie does say that it is imperative for united to build on this european cup and estabilish a dynasty with this group of players and win more european cups so they are closer to milan's and madrid's tally. that will definitely grow the club's stature abroad.

true. but i still hate when we played them in 02/03 how our team was 'awed' by their lineup (i.e. zidane, ronaldo, figo, raul, etc.). you could see it in our lads eyes. its something i've always hated about our teams in europe.
against the madrid's and milan's, a lot of times our players, even though they are supremely accomplished, get star struck. hopefully this generation can put that to rest for good. |

In certain parts of the world we are in certain parts we're not, but clearly we're growing with players like Anderson, Tevez, Nani getting people from other countries interested
It takes time, but Ronaldo leaving would not prove anything. He grew up watching spanish football because of location etc and these things leave an impression on a person. It's changing though, with the premiership recognised as being the best league if we continue our development in the europe we can make massive strides But it's a funny thing. Manchester United '3 European cups', Barcelona '2 European cups', Notts Forest '2 European cups' etc So a big part is not so much the past but what you do now and we're champions of Europe. Reclaiming that title etc would be amazing for the club |

Ridiculous. If there's anything Madrid lack it is "superstars" and that's one of the main reasons they're looking to Ronaldo.
When you think of the Barcelona of two seasons ago you would always think of "Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Messi" etc they are pretty much superstars. When I think of Real Madrid right now, I can't think of these so-called "superstars", two of their best players are at right back and in goal. They do have quality players etc but not superstars and that's what they're lacking... at least right now. |

I personally feel our club has more 'superstars' then them.
Just because a player goes to that club doesn't make them better then everyone else. Thank fuck our club doesn't self proclaim itself to be something they maybe not. Real Madrid must get a hard-on each time they try to convince everyone their the greatest thing since slice bread. |

Great support? Chelsea have always had great support.. Numbers of trophies won home and abroad? Liverpool have us there.. Surviving disasters? Torino have suffered similar tragedies to us.. Great players? Ajax have arguably have produced more top class players over a longer period of time.. Is it wealth? Real Madrid can match us for this... I don't need my club to be the best or biggest for me to love it. |
