This year the categories are split into Junior level (u-14), Premier level (u-18 i think) and Elite level (u-19 national teams) United have surprisingly not entered a Junior team this year for the first time in years. COUNTY ARMAGH 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 2
Sylvan Blake... remember the name. He has the potential to be a shooting star at Old Trafford! Since David Beckham and company graced the international youth tournament 12 years ago, its become something of a Milk Cup tradition to try and unearth another top talent. Blake might just fit the bill. As United warmed up for another assault on the title that has eluded them since their famous 1991 success, they demonstrated enough skill in front of a 2,000 crowd at Mournview yesterday to suggest they might be in with a shout. Blake, wearing the number 9 jersey didnt get his name on the scoresheet although he probably should have. In the end United ran out 2-0 winners against County Armagh but coach Gerry McKee can be proud of the way his youngsters battled every step of the way. Uniteds class really told in the second half as they turned up the heat with Blake always a threat. Bold Armagh opened on the attack but soon discovered the Red Devils had an appetite for coming forward. If you wanted a Beckham lookalike they had one in the kid in that famous number 7 shirt and Markus Neumayr did not disappoint, scoring the 2nd goal from close range. He possessed a deft touch and looked the part as did several of the guys in Dave Bushell's squad. Before that Daniel Simpson had set United on the victory path with a strike early in the second half. Armagh should have levelled when Gary Hill and Stephen Hughes combined. Hughes wriggled into a shooting position but keeper Thomas Heaton had come out to block his effort. Not to be outdone, Armagh keeper Micheal Goff, a member of the Linfield youth academy, produced a stunning save to turn Blakes blistering shot over the bar. However, Neumayr beat him in the dying minutes to cement the victory and send the large contingent of Reds fans in the 2,000 crowd home happy. Premier Results: Cherry Orchard 4 Dundalk 0; Co. Antrim 2 Dynamo Kiev 2; Crewe 3 HK Factor 0; Kilmarnock 2 Maccabi Haifi 4; Otago (NZ) 0 Panathinaikos 1; Preston 1 India 0; Botofogo 1 Co. Londonderry 0; Co. Armagh 0 Manchester United 2; Co Down 0 Univeridad Catolica 3; Co. Fermanagh 2 Bayern Munich 3; Co Tyrone 2 Leeds United 3; River Plate 1 Toulouse 2 |

Just look at Kewell, he's got injured ankle ligaments already. <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" /> But Timm has struggled with hamstring injuries cos of his speed and acceleration like Giggs and Owen - hopefully the lessons of Giggs can be applied to him. Barring injury and making the progress his talent indicates Timm will be world class, as good as Giggs combined with Scholes - in 5 years when he's the same age as Ronaldinho I think he may well be just as good and probably more effective in a team than him. Blake is a bit younger, very strong, blistering pace, dribbles and has an eye for goal - its harder to tell with him how he'll do cos he's younger and less tested in reserves/Champions League etc. but he has the natural qualities (athletic/strong/pace/ballskill) to be a future first choice striker. I think they'd make a brilliant combination personally - Timm as the deep forward, and Blake up front running them ragged. Neither are too small in build either and look like they'll develop into physical players. |

Neumayr kid sounds pormising.
Youth team players to break into the first team this year? Fletcher, Timm and Richardson. IMO. With maybe a few others having sub appearances every now and again. |

Timm should play regularly for reserve this year and be given some EPL playing time whenever possible ... Don't think he'll "break through" else he should already follow the US Tour squad out there ..
Blake looks a real interesting player ... I am really excited to see him grow. With FF I **** he's under a good coach now who could really nurture him well ... We could end up having our own samba star ![]() |

Milk Cup: United unearth midget gems YOU won't find Manchester United coach Dave Bushell counting his chickens before they're hatched - but the truth is he may well have a few midget gems in the bag for Old Trafford! Bushell wages a constant battle to keep his new kids on the block out of the spotlight but admits its near impossible to shield them from the intense media interest which follows United teams everywhere they go. His daily reports back to Sir Alex Ferguson must make pretty good reading though! The 'boss' likes to be kept up to date with how his favourite team are progressing at his favourite youth tournament. Yesterday's despatch will have underlined the point that Sylvan Blake is turning a few heads and is taking it all in his stride. No proud boasts from the two-goal striker yesterday as he wrapped up the points early against New Zealand's Otago boys who may have come out on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline but still walked tall after mixing it with one of the world's famous clubs. By the time Blake breezed in to tuck away two close range goals Otago players must have sensed they could end up as cannon fodder. A combination of stout defending, some poor finishing from United and the odd rub of the green meant they were only caught out twice more by Paul McShane's second half header and Richard Jones simple tap in. It was a tidy performance and Sylvan was happy to lay the success at the feet of his team mates: "Everyone worked really hard for this result. It was a great team effort and we hope we can keep it going," he said. United now lead Group Two ahead of rivals Panathinaikos who were surprisingly held to a scoreless draw by County Armagh in Coleraine. So tonight's showdown at Coleraine Showgrounds is eagerly anticipated. United are favourites to go through against the Greeks. Results: Co Tyrone 0, River Plate 2; Leeds Utd 5, Toulouse 0; Botafogo 3, NK Factor 1; Cherry Orchard 1, Universidad Catolica 0; Co. Armagh 0, Panathinaikos 0;Co. Down 5, Dundalk SL 1; Co. Fermanagh 1, Maccabi Haifa 0; Crewe Alexandra 1, Co. Londonderry 0; India 2, Dynamo Kiev1; Kilmarnock 2, Bayern Munich 2; Manchester Utd 4, Otago 0; Preston North End 1 Co. Antrim 0. I reckon our main threat is going to come from Leeds this year, though Crewe are usually there or thereabouts every year. |

![]() McShane in action at the Milk Cup ALTERNATIVE MATCH REPORT SENSATIONAL Sylvan Blake led Manchester United a step closer to the last eight of the Premier Milk Cup yesterday as the young Red Devils swept past Kiwi hopefuls Otago. Blake weighed in with a delightful first half double to put the skids under the New Zealanders who ended up chasing shadows for much of the afternoon. United now head Group Two ahead of Greek rivals Panathinaikos who were surprisingly held to a scoreless draw by County Armagh in Coleraine. Ballymoney almost ground to a complete standstill as the United road show hit town. The Red Devils threatened to run up a cricket score at the Cricket Park but in the end they cruised to a comfortable success. Blake struck twice in as many minutes to tie up the contest and Philip Marsh clipped the far post as the Reds ran riot through the Otago defence. Clint Burton should have extended the lead but he could only fire his shot over the bar as the waves of attacks continued unchecked. Only a goal line header by Croydon Wheeler denied Blake his hattrick and before the break defender Simon Chan deflected away a goalward shot. In the second period Irish teenager Paul McShane headed United's third and Richard Jones completed the scoring although the Otaga goal led a charmed life at times. United face Panathinaikos at Coleraine Showgrounds (7.00) and require only a point to go through. |

Plays on the shoulder of the last defender and is lightening quick - more so than Cole. |

![]() Ryan Shawcross takes on Panathinaikos' Vasileios Thomaldis. PANATHINAIKOS blew their big chance of glory against Manchester United last night by failing to take the numerous chances that came their way. And the Greeks paid the penalty later when United's gifted young striker Sylvan Blake got on the end of Graeme Port's inswinging corner to find the net from eight yards out. Meanwhile, two first half goals from Georg Niedermeier and Kamer Atkas had Bayern Munich in cruise control against Maccabi Haifa. Preston North End, whose Under-14s also reached the last eight, have to tackle reigning champions Leeds United at Ballymoney Showgrounds. Aaron McConville scored twice as Preston put the brakes on Dynamo Kiev with a 3-1 success. Ben Kitchen added the third. Leeds, minus the magic of James Milner this year, still booked their place with a 1-0 win against River Plate. Martin Woods proved just as capable in front of goal with winner. There was Dublin delight as Cherry Orchard drew Brazilians Botafogo at Coleraine Rugby Club. Cherry Orchard picked off another three points yesterday when Paul Byrne scored against County Down but Botafogo were held to a 1-1 draw by Crewe Alexandra. Crewe, winners in 1999 and 1987, will tackle Chile's impressive Universidad Catolica at Mullaghacall in Portstewart. Osvaldo Lopez scored twice as Catolica hit Dundalk for six in their final qualifier. Andres Silva, Diego Medel, Antonio Gonzaleza and Rodrigo Roman got on the scoresheet while Damien McKenna hit Dundalk's goal. A Martin Smith double helped County Londonderry to an impressive 4-2 victory over Slovenia's NK Factor. Eoghan Tucker and Andrew Ferris completed the scoring for the local lads. County Tyrone held Toulouse in a 2-2 draw. Dermot McCaffrey and Blaine Nugent hit the goals while a dtwo from Kevin Dupuy earned a point for the French. County Fermanagh and Kilmarnock fought out a tight contest but the Scots finally edged it thanks to Steven Naismith's brace and a third from Patrick Cullen. Gary Maguire scored for Fermanagh while Robbie Cochrane had the misfortune to record an own goal. India's national team, off to Wales following the tournament to compete in the Ian Rush Trophy, beat County Antrim 2-0 with strikes from Manjit Rahman and Manjit Singh while County Armagh ran out 2-0 winners over Otago. PREMIER RESULTS: Cherry Orchard 1, Co. Down 0; Crewe 1 , Botafogo 1; NK Factor 2, Co. Londonderry 4; Universidad Catolica 6, Dundalk SL 1; Bayern Munich 2, Maccabi Haifa 0; Co. Antrim 0, India 2; Co. Armagh 2, Otago 0; Co. Tyrone 2, Toulouse 2; Kilmarnock 3, Co. Fermanagh 2; Leeds Utd 1, River Plate 0; Manchester Utd 1, Panathaniakos 0; Preston North End 3, Dynamo Kiev 1. UNITED now face Bayern Munich in the Quarter Finals tonight |
