The Reds first port of call is Cape Town where they will meet Kaizer Chiefs at the Newlands Stadium on Saturday 19 July. Orlando Pirates pose the next challenge, in Durban’s ABSA Stadium on Tuesday 22 July, before United face one of the sides again in the final at Loftus Stadium, Tshwane on Saturday 26 July. Notable absentees from the travelling party are United's Euro 2008 contingent of Patrice Evra, Nani, Edwin van der Sar and Cristiano Ronaldo who is continuing his recovery from ankle surgery. Brazilian midfielder Anderson and Chinese striker Dong Fangzhuo are also missing after being called up to represent their countries at the Olympics in Beijing next month. The pair are likely to face each other after China were drawn with Brazil, New Zealand and Belgium in the group stages. Also missing from the South Africa-bound group are Louis Saha, Owen Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park, who has been excused from the trip following a knee complaint over the summer. |

Hargreaves' injury is tendonitis again, but SAF says he should be right for the start of the season. Also confirmed that Saha is in France recovering from whatever his latest injury, and that Manucho has broken a metatarsal (but we'll still be applying for a WP when we get back from SA).

The only guy in the whole squad who hasn't shown himself to be "above" reserve level is Amos and he's only going because we need a 3rd keeper and VdS is still on holiday and Heaton with Cardiff. Everyone else is a reserve team veteran and have had loan spells at other clubs as well and they can't really be kept back any longer. |

Possebon along with Cathcart and Cleverly join the squad:
Three Manchester United teenagers are flying out to South Africa to join the squad. Defender Craig Cathcart (19) has been drafted in as well as midfielders Tom Cleverly (18) and Rodrigo Possebon (19). The trio have all played for the reserves and will link up with United who play their final game in the Vodacom Challenge on Saturday in Pretoria. Then the squad will move on to Nigeria for a friendly against Portsmouth before flying home. |
