Travelling party
Goalkeepers: Ben Amos, Ben Foster, Tomasz Kuszczak

Defenders: Wes Brown, Jonathan Evans, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, John O’Shea, Mikael Silvestre, Danny Simpson, Nemanja Vidic

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Chris Eagles, Darren Fletcher, Darron Gibson, Ryan Giggs, Lee Martin, Paul Scholes

Strikers: Fraizer Campbell, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez

The Reds fly to South Africa on Thursday afternoon ahead of their participation in the Vodacom Challenge.

Sir Alex Ferguson has selected a 21-man squad for the pre-season trip which also includes a visit to Nigeria for a friendly with Portsmouth.

The Reds first port of call is Cape Town where they will meet Kaizer Chiefs at the Newlands Stadium on Saturday 19 July.

Orlando Pirates pose the next challenge, in Durban’s ABSA Stadium on Tuesday 22 July, before United face one of the sides again in the final at Loftus Stadium, Tshwane on Saturday 26 July.

The Reds' final game takes place in the Nigerian capital of Abuja on Sunday 27 July against Harry Redknapp's side. Fans can watch all the matches live on MUTV and MUTV Online.

Notable absentees from the travelling party are United's Euro 2008 contingent of Patrice Evra, Nani, Edwin van der Sar and Cristiano Ronaldo who is continuing his recovery from ankle surgery.

Brazilian midfielder Anderson and Chinese striker Dong Fangzhuo are also missing after being called up to represent their countries at the Olympics in Beijing next month. The pair are likely to face each other after China were drawn with Brazil, New Zealand and Belgium in the group stages.

Also missing from the South Africa-bound group are Louis Saha, Owen Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park, who has been excused from the trip following a knee complaint over the summer.

ANy other proof required to get rid of him?

I can excuse Hargo and Park as they at least took part on the last season but Saha just cant help his cause even in the fecking break.

Hargreaves' injury is tendonitis again, but SAF says he should be right for the start of the season. Also confirmed that Saha is in France recovering from whatever his latest injury, and that Manucho has broken a metatarsal (but we'll still be applying for a WP when we get back from SA).

Ferguson took charge of a 21-man party for the four-match tour, which opens against the Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town on Saturday.

Aside from Nani, Edwin van der Sar and Patrice Evra, who were all in action at Euro 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo, who is recovering from an ankle operation, and Anderson, who played for Brazil in World Cup qualifying action, the main absentee was Owen Hargreaves.

Ferguson confirmed the tendonitis problem, which reared its head during last pre-season and bothered the England international until November when he eventually was forced to have injections to ease the problem, has resurfaced.

'It was apparent as soon as he came back to training,' said the United boss.

'It is the same as last year. Some people get these things.

'Maybe re-starting training on the firmish grounds brings it on or maybe it is just an inherent problem.

'We are trying to sort it out now with injections. That is what we did last November and it worked. Hopefully these work and by the time we come back from South Africa he should be okay.'

Ferguson expects Hargreaves to link up with the other senior stars who remained in Manchester and could yet be involved in a reserve team outing at Oxford on July 26.

Well it would have been nice to see them play but I think it's fair enough that players prove themselves in the reserves before training and having games with the first team.

The only guy in the whole squad who hasn't shown himself to be "above" reserve level is Amos and he's only going because we need a 3rd keeper and VdS is still on holiday and Heaton with Cardiff. Everyone else is a reserve team veteran and have had loan spells at other clubs as well and they can't really be kept back any longer.

This could be a possibility. We need players who are fit. That squad is ok for pre season but it is lacking more quality on the wings.

I´d love to see Rooney and Campbell start a game up front, I think they could form a good partnership.

Hargreaves has that German philosophy about him. Disappears for about half the season but comes to his own almost towards the crunch end of the season.

i reckon we could get a good 5-6m if we sold gibson and martin this summer. rather that than letting them leave when their contracts up.

Possebon along with Cathcart and Cleverly join the squad:

Three Manchester United teenagers are flying out to South Africa to join the squad.

Defender Craig Cathcart (19) has been drafted in as well as midfielders Tom Cleverly (18) and Rodrigo Possebon (19).

The trio have all played for the reserves and will link up with United who play their final game in the Vodacom Challenge on Saturday in Pretoria.

Then the squad will move on to Nigeria for a friendly against Portsmouth before flying home.

Fergie said he's in France gettin treatment - he looked a tad pissed / disgruntled / embarassed to say the least!

I fucking couldnt believe he was injured, as it was only a while ago Saha was saying he was doing good trianing sessions over the summer & would be sorted for start of season!

I heard he dislocated his jaw from laughing at Will Ferrel!
