Wayne Rooney is worn out, says Landon Donovan

United States captain Landon Donovan believes a long season is catching up with “worn out” England striker Wayne Rooney ahead of their World Cup clash.

The Manchester United player has been troubled by ankle and groin injuries in recent weeks having endured a 49-game campaign.

Donovan believes Rooney will be short of his best when England face the USA on 12 June.

“Rooney is a top player — one of the best in the world right now,” said the midfielder. “But the other part of it is that he has played a lot of games and he is tired. He is probably worn out. Injuries are a part of that. Things happen when players are tired.”

Donovan believes all the pressure will be on Fabio Capello's side when they meet in Rustenburg.

“If we don't do well in the World Cup, people care a little bit,” said the LA Galaxy man. “But if England don't do well, it is absolutely devastating to their country, their families and their people.”

Does Landon know Rooney has nearly a months rest before the WC?

He's right. If Berba had been firing on all cylinders, Fergie would have had no problem resting Wayne for a couple of games; even if Owen had still been fit he might have done it.

He is unfit and not up to the speed at the moment. But given the time before the world cup, he should be fine.

Jesus, any thread can get turned into a thread about Berbatov these days. Getting beyond boring. In fact I'm going to use the word tedious instead.

What a precision analysis by Landon. He is a true reader of the game, and its players. None of us would have ever thought about it. No wonder Rooney looked subdued the last two games. SAF should get him as player/adviser.

SAF is always saying that Rooney insists on playing no matter which game: Prem, CL, FAC, CC - even friendlies.

Donovan's poor attempt at mind games.

Hasn't Landon basically played a season and a half consecutively by swapping leagues on loan when seasons ended?

Yes but one of those seasons is for the LA galaxy, so i'm assuming it doesnt count.

I am hoping for a great USA - England match, but these comments really aren't necessary. Rooney is the type of player who would let this piss him off to the point where he would bag a brace just to prove a point.

Don't think he's off the mark to be honest. There is a real risk that should England progress to the SF or Finals that Rooney will come back burnt out. I think we have relied on him too much this season because Fergie doesn't trust the other forwards enough, and I think England will rely on his too much because the other forwards just aren't good enough.

Frankly. I hope England make the QF and get beat by Germany (something most of the English speaking world has come to expect). Rooney comes back with a hunger to win something and then focuses on the league and CL.

Hopefully we will have got him that extra striker he wants (someone to share the scoring load)

By that logic, does that mean that the Fulham internationals are even more worn out by playing 60+ games?

You mean Becks who came in and insisted he have the the Capt's armband, taking it away from Landon with Landon's blessing... only to turn around and whore himself off to Milan mid-season? Sorry I do not care when or how you call out someone for that.

Far as I know we only have one side of that story. Has Landon's version been corroborated by anyone else?

Can you pls highlight the part where Landon is slagging Rooney off? Don't you believe that while "Rooney is a top player — one of the best in the world right now.", he had also "played a lot of games" and is "probably worn out"? I agree with every word Landon said. In matter of fact I think that he is pretty much stating the obvious.

Plenty of quotes in here. And this is Sports Illustrated a very respected magazine in the US (and that is before you factor in the difference between US and England press).

It wasn't "Landon's version." It was a researched journalists version told by several sources.

I fear Rooney's never truly going to shine at the world cup stage because of injuries. He was half fit for the 2006 world cup and it didn't work out for him, and i fear it could happen again. I think there's a big chance the injuries have ruined his chances of having a world cup where he truly plays his best.

Get a fucking grip. It's common for players to run off to the side of the pitch for a piss during training.

To be fair, though, he should have shit in a bag and thrown it at your fans for the pro-Obama chants.

Well, it's true. One of the reason's Wayne was calling for another half decent striker.

It's ludicrous for a team competing in 3 or 4 campaigns to have only 1 fit striker in the squad who's capable of scoring goals.

Its understandable if he is tired after the season he has had. But he has a month to rest up before the world cup, apart from a couple of friendlies that he probably wont play the full 90 in. He'll be fine for the world cup
