Well Said Eric
Cantona delivers Ronaldo verdict
Stuart Mathieson 5/ 6/2008 ERIC Cantona has told Cristiano Ronaldo: United will be great with or without you. The Old Trafford legend is convinced United needn't worry about losing the Portuguese international - insisting they can dominate even if the double footballer of the year moves to Real Madrid this summer. "United is one of the biggest clubs in the world," said Cantona. "They have been winning, are winning and will continue to win things generation after generation. They will always win whoever they have playing for them." The simmering saga over Ronaldo's future continues to cast a shadow over United's summer. The 23-year-old 42-goal winger has promised to make clear his future after Real's much-publicised pursuit of him. Chief executive David Gill yesterday refused to add more fuel to the Ronaldo debate but revealed he is almost certain to miss their pre-season tour of South Africa. "Our position is clear," he said. "Alex and myself have stated it in the last week or so and that is all we are going to say full stop. "Whether he is on the tour depends on how Portugal do in the European Championships. "The Euro 2008 players will come back three weeks after their team is knocked out when they've had a holiday." Ronaldo's Euro 2008 kicks off against Turkey on Saturday followed by a match against Czech Republic on June 11 and the final Group A game against Switzerland on June 15. If Portugal reach the semi finals he won't make the tour. |

Truth is we have the best squad in europe today and will probably stay on top for some time to come, even without Ronaldo. He need united more than we need him - and I really believe that. I wouldn't want him to leave though, just to state this isn't a question of pride. He's off to Real and he is going to a team that will need several years of improvement to reach our level. Beaten by a Roma side that we easily burried under the ground.

I agree with King Eric, United are far from a one man team. If Ronaldo decides to go then there is no point keeping him to a contract he doesn't want to honour. Good luck to him.
My belief is that if he does decide to go then he will regret it for the rest of his life. Ronaldo is far from the legend that Cantona is. |

He doesnt, but given Ronaldo is the only one rumoured to be leaving us any time soon (well one that had impact last season) it surely is aimed at him given the context.
Im mixed on the whole deal if Ronaldo decides he wants to move. Do we keep him and make a stand (especially against Madrid) that we wont take shit like this and we arent a selling club, or would it be wiser to cash in making maximum profit and investing back into the club. |

Cantona is a legend, Ronaldo won't be if he leaves. So all this stuff he's said about wanting to become a legend will be worthless. If he want to know how to become legend, look towards Cantona and heed his words.

I'm firmly of the belief that Ronaldo would be no where near as good as he is without the players he's playing with. He'd be left to try at Madrid and would be left in a static proper right wing position. The defenders wouldn't just sit and watch his step overs, they'd tackle right in. Ronaldo is fantastic there's no doubt about that but without United I think he'd be nothing more then a very good player.
He can be replaced (gasp). |

It's easy to forget he's already been around for 5 years. There are very few players today who stay that long with a club, especially when there are no real routes involved. If he leaves for Real Madrid that will not be his last club either, by far.
