Going to see Derren Brown tonight.

Me and my missus are going to Wolverhampton tonight with twelve of her family, first for an all-you-can-eat Chinese and then to see Derren Brown's Svengali show. I've never seen Brown live before, but do you guys think he really speaks to the dead or is it all some kind of parlour trick?

I thought he made it clear that everything he does is a trick.

Well I think he says himself at the start of his shows that it's all bullshit but I reckon he's bluffing. Definitely a wizard or something.

This is what I'm thinking. Perhaps the real trick is that he makes us believe he's not a Wizard at all. "The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled..." etc

I have seen Enigma, Derren Brown is fantastic live. Epic show, he is very open about the fact that he does not speak to the dead, in fact when he did the seance show he specifically said he does not believe in spiritualism in any way. He describes his work as a mixture of psychology, showmanship and magic and using powers of suggestion. Looking forward to seeing Svengali when he releases it on DVD

It doesn't make sense though, iSparkles, some of the things he does would be absolutely impossible if he wasn't in some kind of contact with supernatural forces.

Any man who can predict the lottery numbers after they've been drawn is clearly some form of genius/sorcerer...

The first one I saw was 'Something wicked this way comes'. Loved it.
His stage shows are pretty good. The lottery one was awful tho.

He overplays the psychology and powers of suggestion bit.

Very clever tricks.

Its clear he is ridiculously intelligent, in fact he seems to be a superior being to the rest of us! According to what he has said in the past its partly from people in a heightened state of mind during the shows and not all of his tricks work on everyone mainly people who are highly suggestible. There is a lot of mind fuck in his shows though for sure.

Would you say then that it's probably about 95% tricks to 5% genuine contact with the supernatural? I don't believe that everything he does comes from ghosts or anything, but there's just no other explanation for some of the stuff he does, he must have had ghosts helping him at some stage.

I'd say that's a conservative estimate. I reckon he can control where that frisbee of his lands too. Is that telekinesis?

The man's clearly some sort of high order warlock. Back in the day, someone would have burned him.

Exactly, he says so himself, but that doesn't prove that there aren't supernatural forces in play. If I were in contact with the dead I think I'd keep it secret too!

I'm not a firm believer in telekinesis, but there's certainly enough anecdotal evidence around to warrant further study.

I'm convinced he's using many forms of evil withcraft and wizadry, and the whole "only psychology" element of of it is just to trick us into falling for his plan.

Haven't quite figured out what his plan is yet though.

It would not surprise me if he did have some genuine contact with the supernatural to be honest, some of the stuff he does is just plain freaky! but amazing!

Definitely ghosts and spirits and stuff, cider. Won't you be scared with the presence of spirits?

There's a clear difference in believing ghosts are just bumbling about among us and believing that someone is able to contact the dead in some way.

I'm nervous, without doubt, but I believe the spirits he works with to be benevolent, and so I'm comfortable putting myself in that situation. What does worry me though is that this Svengali show in particular has been described as his 'darkest' show yet, focusing much on the occult, and that could well be a case of him pushing his luck imo.

Which Chinese are you going to? Wing Wahs or the Imperial? Would definitely recommend Wing Wah's, not been to the Imp for years.

It can certainly be offensive and the original shortened word itself is commonly seen as a racial insult.
