Quick Poll: How many of you are smokers?

Do you smoke? (tobacco)

If so, how long for? What age did you start?

Not anymore, gave them up a year and a half ago. Delighted I did, fucking things cost a fortune and you end up smelling like shit. What fucked me off though when I was smoking was these so called "social smokers" who only smoke when drinking and beg you for a cigarette and then say, "oh please I dont buy packs I am only a social smoker..."

Oh really? A social smoker? Well fuck off into that shop and socially buy yourself a pack of cigarettes then

Finally. 1 on the fence. You're a smoker, dumass. You either smoke or you don't. Just because you smoke twice every week when you drink doesn't make you any less of a smoker.

Social smokers.. pfft.

I tried it a bit when I was younger, as most kids probably do at some point.

Never got seriously into it.

Something quite odd has happened to me. I quit smoking completely for about 2 years but then about 8 months ago started to smoke again when I'm having a drink. 4 years ago had you told me I'd become a social smoker I wouldn't have believed you because I was at least 15 a day, drink or no drink.

For the past 8 months I've been doing this. Ideally I'd like to go back to not smoking at all, but I do enjoy a smoke with a pint. What I hated about smoking was sober smoking, and it's not something I do anymore. Take for example today. I know I'm not going to be drinking until Friday night, and so the thought of a cigarette just doesn't enter my mind.

I think it would be very easy to break this habitual behavior though, and so I make rules for myself that I cannot break.

Wish I could say the same. Sounds daft, but one thing I would really miss if I quit is just getting up and outside away from my computer screen for 5-10 minutes every hour and a half or so.

I stopped 5 years ago this month, can't believe its is quite that long already. I smoked for nigh on 20 years.

When it became something I did just for the sake of it rather than as a pleasure I knew it was time to stop, I used to smoke at exactly the same times every day.

Well no that doesn't sound daft at all. It makes perfect sense to any smoker on here. Cigarettes are a sort of time divider if you get me. They almost partition your day. Have a smoke after breakfast, have a smoke when passing a certain landmark in your car on the way to work. The list is endless. It's quite ritualistic of us, which is why (when drinking) I never smoke just after I've had a meal. All it would take is for it to happen once, and then next thing I know I've got a craving for a smoke after a meal when I'm not drinking. It's little things like that that I feel have kept me a social smoker.

Yep, the grinding weekday routine. Cig on way to bus stop, one when I get out the tube, one at around 10:30am etc...ad infinitum...

Quit again Kinky. Social smoking is better than full time smoking but it will probably still kill you sooner or later.

It's odd, and there always seemed to be one or two smokes left the following day in the previous day's pack to keep you hooked

Nope, never been a smoker. Always hated the smell and couldn't imagine choosing to basically choke myself on minging clouds of crap.

I once asked my dad if I could smoke when I was a kid, gave me a drag on one of his. I didn't do it properly and he told me to breath it in so I did and subsequently went into a coughing fit and since then I have not touched a cigarette and I never will.

I know but most of us start when we are young and stupid. I was 15- the weirdest thing is my brother started at about 22 He was a bit of a late bloomer on the smoking and drinking side of things after previously slagging me off for it.

It is very habit driven, you're right and you almost measure distances you have to walk by if you can fit one in or not etc...was never a social smoker and not sure if I could knock it down a notch to that. Might be worth a try, but you hear that statistically cutting down as a means of ultimately quitting seldom works.

Started at 13, now 30. Currently using patches and some stupid inhaler thing to try and get off them. Not easy at all. Wouldn't mind getting to a stage where I have the occassional one when drinking, rather than the 20/30/40 a day I previously puffed through me.

God I love smoking.

Started at 16 and I'm now 25. I always said I'd quit at 22/23 or when 20 cigs reached £6.50 a pack.

So much for both of those ideas. I've smoked rollies for the last few years and have smoked less as a result.

I seem to remember hearing that it's 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 people smoke... or something like that, in which case it looks like the Caf is providing an accurate sample.

I've never really looked into the stats myself (as I've had no reason to) but how does the UK stack up compared to the rest of Europe?? I swear nearly everyone smokes over the channel...
