The Stock Exchange Game 2012

Begins at 14:30 GMT on Friday afternoon.

Redcafe 2012 - Free stock market game - MarketWatch.com
Password: redcafe

You know the drill, go to the link, sign up, etc. etc.

To make it more interesting I have upped the initial starting funds to $1,000,000 and have extended the ending date to 31st May making it easier to both go very far and do very badly, to allow stock values to mature overtime etc. and to allow you to drop in and out and what have you.

Last year's thread: The Redcafe Stock Exchange Game III - redcafe save me from the summer

I didn't do this last year. Does it take a lot effort to get the hang of it?

I signed up for the last one. Had no idea what I was doing, traded some shares and after a few days saw I was pretty much bottom so left the game alone after that It's a shame they've changed the site. Would have been interesting to see how I finished back then.

I played last year. Things were going horribly until someone explained the concept of short selling.

The benefit of doing games based on the NYSE is that stock markets tend to follow the lead of stock markets that open earlier in the day which helps in the learning curve. Just read the top line stories on the FT or WSJ sites and you'll get the drift.

One of the benefits over last year is that all the information and trading is in realtime, last year there was a twenty minute delay.

Last year was difficult as it coincided with a period of uncertainty and fear for the US economy meaning that the stock exchange was very jittery and erratic. It coincided with the fears that the United States would default.

Whereas now the US is in an upswing that should result in stability on Wall Street.

During the time we were doing this last year Footlooker's share price fell by 50%, since then it has steadily regained its previous value and has gone beyond it.

If it plummets again we'll know why.

One of the reasons I made it go to the end of May is to make it easier for people to get to grips with it and have time to do well.

I'm in for the third year in a row, although I still know next to nothing about American shares; last year I barely made a 5% return.

Done buying. Having $1m quid of not-real money to spend is infinitely better/easier than managing your own retirement account!

Indeed it is, if I was doing this with my actual money my blood pressure would be going through the roof.

I'm going to not win

Can we invest in other players, if so I'm investing all in Damien. Once he gets the hang of it, it would be impossible for him to lose.

You'll be able to see everybody else's holdings - I can change the settings to make them private though I'd prefer to keep them open.

For reference the other things I can do is delete people and extend/shorten the end date.

Those with different names on that site should probably reveal them.

Am I right in thinking we cannot see each others portfolio until the game begins?

You cannot see trades that are pending.

And you are right regarding other names.

Though it does tell you how much money has been committed - for instance Dresilved has put about $125,000 into something.

I put money into something. Her name's Katie

And why wait to start making trades? Keeping a cash reserve's a sound real-life investment strategy, but this is a game. You win by having your shit go up (or down, if you've shorted) in value.

Yeah sorry, my account name there is Staind. Might have to do with the fact that I was listening to one of their songs on Pandora while registering.

To cut a long story short, it is betting that the value of a stock will fall.

Many attributed it to the stock market meltdowns in 2008, across the world authorities banned it at the time to prevent the destruction of corporations.

You can put money on anything on the stock market, I am not sure if you can do it on this game but spreadbetting for instance - instead of putting money into shares you can put money on the index itself for example $1,000 for every point it rises or $1,000 to be paid for every point it drops.
