Stupid decision. They've just put on the best international tournament in ages and they want to change it. It will probably have more matches with less quality and drag on, whereas 2008 was short and sweet. But it means more money for the federations, so who cares.

Besides, I'd have thought most countries in Europe don't have enough stadia that fit the requirements and can hold a tournament that will be almost as big as the World Cup now.

I guess 6 groups of 4, top two qualify in each group plus four best placed 3rd teams to make up the last 16. Insane.

The Best 3rd Place system is terrible though, it's horribly biased against teams who get difficult groups.

Yeah that would be my guess aswell.

Four groups of six with the top two qualifying in each group would mean the group stage would go on for far too long.

It will work out like this

UEFA's TV Revenue - Goes Up
UEFA's Sponsorship Revenue - Goes Up
UEFA's Ticketing Revenue - Goes Up
UEFA's reputation about caring more about football rather than money - Goes Down.

(based on 6 groups of 4) Unless there is no second round, with the quarter finals straight after the group stage with only the winners of each group automatically qualifying which would liven them up as every game would matter. That leaves two unfilled spots and knowing UEFA they'd give one to the best loser and the other who tops the fair play league. Of course this would mean there is a round less than the other option to have a round of 16 as suggested, which would not be the best thing financially.

Though the safest and fairest way to do it, but at the detriment of the competition would instead of having six groups of four would be to have four groups of six with the top two automatically qualifying.

24 looks okay but it goes beyond that, its death to Euros. Only in the 24 team format we witnessed some great World cups, and worthy winners with best third placed teams moving to the second round and the draw being more intense. Increasing the pool size to 32 have only created freakish finalists so far, helped Brazil, France and Germany even though they were mediocre.
