At some point he'll score 4 goals in a month and will be 'back', it's bound to happen. After that someone else will take the blame for his return to shooting blanks.

If you decide to sell him, i'd think you'd get around 7-8mil tops.

Sums it up that his 'great game' consisted of winning a couple of headers from the long balls directed at him.

You have to laugh when thats a 'good game' for him.

Yeh he tried hard, tracked back and put himself about a bit. Few good bits of link of play but the chance was one you would expect a £35m striker to score.

Stoke are they only team who would get the best out of him but I think he'd do a great job there.

If he scores 3 or 4 between now and the end of the season they might be able to get £10 mil for him but you get the feeling Liverpool will stick with him as a £20+ million loss on a player within 18 months would be too great.

A friend of a friend lives opposite him and say he's buying the house he is currently renting so he seems to be settling in Liverpool.

You're stuck with him.

Actually makes you feel sorry for him when you realise he even has to live in Liverpool. Wouldnt wish that on anyone.

Why not? They didnt seem to mind taking a 7m hit on Robbie Keane in a mere matter of months.

He walks like a donkey, he runs like a donkey, he jumps like a donkey. Occasionaly hes running forward and the ball bounces of his head. Someones been playing pin the tail on the donkey with him but they got it wrong and put it on the back of his head by mistake.

I basically just want the upcoming game to be over as we won't win and I shan't imagine there will be positives to take from it, but the mockers in this thread are growing powerful beyond measure at the moment. We might just salvage something.

Makes you think. We brought, Ronaldo, Vidic, Evra, Hernandez and Park for less than Andy Carroll....

We also had enough to throw in the Bebe, Obertan and The one.

I'm of the thinking he can't get any worse so will get better. Some of his touches on the ground have been surprisingly good, better than Kuyt without a doubt. His pace is sh*t, but that's because he still looks unfit even after all these months.

So the Stoke comment was tongue in cheek.

As I´ve said many times, he´ll be a decent enough player for Liverpool, it´s just the price that was a joke.

He suits Liverpool. He's a midtable type of player and Liverpool are a midtable type of team these days.

I was at the Liverpool cup game at City and Carroll was awful...can't believe how his form has vanished after terrorising defenders when he was at NUFC.

You're right he looks unfit which is alarming and I question whether LFC's style suits him. Personally I think he's a good player who needs a run in the team and balls played into the right areas for him...having said that surely with the likes of Bellamy, Enrique, Downing, Gerrard etc around you'd think they'd have tried that.

They already have a big, lumbering striker who isn't suited for the long-ball game no matter how many coaches try: Crouch.

Carroll's strength is not in his hold up play. If they treated him like Villa for Barca or Gomez for Bayern i.e. get the ball to his feet, he'd do better. We English think if you're big we'll lump the ball up and you can handle it. Just goes to show we don't assess technique, we still assess size and athleticism.

Let's all remember - we made fun of Bale for a year before he stormed for Spurs..

Yeah, if anyone bothered to assess technique Carroll would never have made it out of the Championship. People don't get the ball to his feet because he does this:

Carroll excelled in a very direct setup at Newcastle that had balls fired up to him from back to front constantly with wide players (generally Barton) providing constant crosses - there's no reason to suggest he couldn't excel at Stoke. I think you're giving his feet far more credit than the deserve.

Gazza. Exactly. That's what I don't understand.

The buildup was when he was at Newcastle, culminating in a jaw dropping transfer fee. So isn't now the time for knocking him down? I mean, with him being shit and all. What are they waiting for?

There's a lot of truth here.

In the final 15 mins I saw of that Spurs game, I don't think a Liverpool cross beat the first man once... verrrry poor service to anyone. Even Championship sides cross the ball better than that.

And as much as we make fun of Carroll... Downing at 20M looks every bit as much of a waste as the money they spent on the big man.

But at least they still have 15M to spare out of that deal

That's true to an extent, but even when he has been receiving good service, he hasn't been scoring. I remember back when Liverpool were playing Newcastle, Gerrard set him up on a plate several times, but he still squandered every single chance he was given.

Carroll's hold up play was pretty good for us last season, it was one of the parts of his game that seemed to mirculously improve from the Championship to Prem. He was actually much better when you got the ball into his body and feet than he ever was aiming it long for his head for knock downs. He used to make a mess of them all the time, never had the awareness to find a teammate with them and spent half the time flicking them on so he could run after them himself.

He never had a silky first touch or anything but it was genuinely pretty safe and one of the better areas of his game. He could bring it down and use his strength to keep hold of it under pressue. The most alarming thing about Carroll is those areas of his game that were genuine strengths have almost completely gone. When that goes, and he's not even grafting either then you're left with a player who basically has... nothing.

Get with the programme - he's been knocked flat with no help from the journos. This is the faux rehabilitation before they give him a final kicking probably along with Ken Knee.

Andy Carroll: I won't celebrate if I score on Sunday

Andy Carroll has vowed NOT to celebrate if he scores against Newcastle United – as a mark of respect to the Toon Army.

The Teams lad will return to St James’ Park for the first time since leaving United in January last year.

Carroll was sold by the Magpies when Newcastle accepted a £35m bid from the Kop side – with the fee reinvested into the squad and the reason why Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye have helped United charge up to the Premier League’s top six.

There was anger when Carroll was sold, but few can argue with the way things have turned out, with Europa League football a real possibility mainly due to the financial windfall United recouped after Big Andy’s sale to Anfield.

Carroll, who picked up his first major honour by winning the Carling Cup this season, could not be happier.

His return to the club has similarities to the sale of Les Ferdinand in 1997, when the one-time No 9 was sold to Spurs for business reasons despite having previously pledged his allegiance to Newcastle.

The Geordie told the Chronicle in his only interview before the big game: “If I scored on Sunday then I wouldn’t celebrate.

“I hope I get a good reception from the fans, they’ll be getting one from me.

“I thought I did well for the club when I was there and loved it.

“I have some great memories from playing there.

“I have always had a good relationship with the Newcastle fans and it stems back to playing for them.”

Carroll turned down the chance to leave the club after relegation in 2009, but wanted to help lead the Magpies back to the Premier League.

His 19 goals in the Championship helped achieve that goal as the romped to the title.

Carroll’s form proved the catalyst for a England call-up from Fabio Capello and joined the likes of United No 9s Alan Shearer and Jackie Milburn to pull on the England jersey.

His 11 goals in the Premier League proved too much of a temptation for Liverpool, who paid over £35m for his services.

While Carroll was linked with a move to Newcastle last January, the Geordie still enjoys an excellent relationship with players and staff alike.

And Carroll said nothing will stop him being a proud Newcastle fan.

He said: “I still love the club and have a lot of friends still at Newcastle.

“I always want to see them doing well.

“I want to do well for Liverpool of course. But when I come off the pitch playing for Liverpool, how Newcastle have got on is the first score I look for.

“That will always be the case. I want to see them win because I’m still a fan.”
