Hasselbaink and maybe Cudicini aside, my team you could say 2004-2006 considering Makelele, Seedorf, Stankovic, Drogba, Samuel, Sorin etc.

This is the first round I'm really worried about Dan. I never before had a Brazilian as my preferred next pick.

I'd better start working on a Plan B

Dida and Heinze the only two far from it. Not any worse for me than anyone else really.
It was mainly Dida, Heinze and Lampard that stood out. Lampard on 7 goals a season is not quite Lampard, is he?

I'd probably say 1999. All players bar Ziege at the top of their game.

I'd say Ziege was at his peak then as well, no? Not far off. He was at Milan, in the German side and had been for a few years, with plenty of experience. Definitely wouldn't say it's a year that was handicapping him.

If anything, I'd say Makaay wasn't quite into his stride yet. The rest (if not all) fit very nicely.

Not but 8 out of 11 is hardly bad for a single prime year. I have Giggs and the best player in the world in attack. Hardly the primes being scattered about. Hardly any different than your team. Brown and Forlan's prime didn't coincide with Luis Enrique's or Vieiri's.

Yeah, I'd say Luis Enrique and Forlán are my polar opposites so I would always sacrifice one. Forlán was already having people calling for him to be in the NT in 99 though and Brown looked very promising.

My point in your case was more about how differently your team would work with the early Lampard rather than the more recent 20-goal a season one. No doubt it would be a cracking team, but it would be more reliant on the wing play while, not being tied to a specific year, what you actually have are top-form options to be incisive both on the flanks and through the middle.

Fair enough. Lampard did improve a lot by just playing in a better side. But he definitely got much better about 3 years later.

I'm a fan of Forlán with Uruguay. A shame that they're so good now and he's at the end of his career. Similar situation with Iceland. Guðjohnsen past his prime and suddenly there's a proper midfield to feed of.

I'm holding Rood's pick on the basis that this would've easily gotten to him (possibly twice!) by now.

Not sure I can hold out much longer, though I may be up in the night anyway...

That's a bit unfair, he left Depor in 2004 at the age of 34.

Does my 11th player have to be a Goalkeeper? or Can I chose the GK as my 12th pick?

Is the 12th pick a compulsory sub or part of the squad?

Roma favourite and French WC/Euros champion

After much consideration, I'll ditch my favoured goalkeepers that few will have heard of as I would surely need to replace them if I progressed.

I pick SEBASTIEN FREY

Last edited by antohan; 28th January 2012 at 11:54. Reason: Before Frey I had actually picked Leonardo (shakes head)

Candela's a good pick. It's just a pity he had such fierce competition for the national team when they had full-backs of the calibre of Lizarazu, Thuram and Sagnol.

Fuck it, I'll have Barthez then. He was actually a superb keeper, I just prefer my keepers taller that's all and I know it will be a view shared by other caf members.

That said, it was quite remarkable, as I looked at all the other French options, that he kept them all out for a decade, won everything there was to win at club and international level...

And the only reason I wasn't picking him was... 1. Short, 2. Do I want him and Brown together?

In all fairness, he is in an entirely different bracket to anything that there is left.

If anything, I'd say Makaay wasn't quite into his stride yet. The rest (if not all) fit very nicely.
Agreed.

And I expect to play a lot like Roma did in his days, with 3 at the back and wingbacks so he was a no brainer really.
