Arguing with a scouser friend
I know it's futile to argue with them but he's a friend so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
The discussion point was Benitez. He was arguing that there is really no one better who could take over their manager position as good as Benitez. I disagreed saying that Ericsson would be a better option for them. His argument was them winning the Champions League with a shitty squad under Benitez's helm and that they have no money for big transfers. I remember a threat which showed the amounts spent by the big 4 teams which clearly showed that they do have the money and have spent huge amounts on transfers since the "spanish maestro" joined them but could not find it. What is your opinion on Benitez's ability to manage Liverpool, his transfer selections and who would you consider more capable of managing their team. |

He also said that Benitez is trying to fix so many positional gaps that he doesn't spend a lot of money on one player so as to have enough to cover many positions.
My argument was that Liverpool is just not good enough to attract big name players. |

Probably worth pointing out those "positional gaps" are the result of Benitez shipping in and out 3 or 4 players in almost every transfer window since he started. Most of the gaps are left by his own poor signings.

A net amount (cost of players in - money received from sold players), from the big 4 during Rafa's reign would be great. |

That's the site I think you're looking for. Although some ammounts seem wrong and then Benitez has spent more this year obviously. |

He won the league in his first full season and won two more since whilst making a profit for his club in the transfer market in the process. He shits all over Benitez. |

The funny thing is, they worshipped Houllier's shit on a stick football because it brought them some minor trophies and people like Davo were hailing his 'bargain' signings that were going to win them number 19.
Then when the reality of no title hit them as we won it again in 2003, Houllier was gone and they used hindsight bias to claim they knew all along he wasn't going to win them the league. Then Benitez came in and was hailed as a tactical genius as they somehow managed to win the CL... which was a sign nukber 19 was on its way. Now they continue to cling to Rafa being brilliant but just hindered by finances (despite spending around 85 million in the last 12 months on players). The moment Rafa goes they will all claim he was never good enough for them and that he signed a load of shite which the brilliant new manager will need time to clear out. Rinse and Repeat ad infinitum. |

I'd like a Liverpool fan to explain Liverpool's formation to me and how it shows Benite is a genius manager. He plays a static 4-3-3 with no wing backs, it's so narrow. Why with all the player he's brought has he never brought in an attacking full back? There must be lads in the Liverpool acadamy who could do a decent job as it's at least their natural position.

To be honest, the first couple of seasons maybe, I thought they'd genuinely found their man. He seemed to have some idea what he was doing, brought in the likes of Alonso, and they looked to be improving.
Since then though, it's gradually dawned on me that this isn't the case, and that in fact he's probably a bit of a simpleton. The final nail in the coffin was probably his hilarious child like fit over the Gabriel Heinze saga last summer. There was no angle, or genuine reason to feel hard done by. The simple fact is he was too thick to understand what was going on, and no matter who explained it to him, he could neither understand nor accept it. "We have a legal document!" you have a fax, you fat Spanish twat. Go and sit back down in the corner He's done this loads of times with stuff now. When he can't get his way with something, he reveals himself to be a complete retard. It's not like Wenger or Fergie, where they have an angle, or just lose it in the face of defeat, it's genuine retardedness. It's reflected in his management aswell. Not just the signing of players, or ridiculous persistence with trying to win games by attacking with no more than two players at any one time, but during the games. He sulks, and starts making stupid decisions, just to prove a point which doesn't exist anywhere other than in his head; Sub Gerrard off when we're losing to show everyone I'll dare to sub Gerrard off when we're losing...Why? This isn't pre-school, Rafa. It's gotten to the point where his dimwit American bosses (who can't tell the difference between Manchester United and West Ham), have had to stop him from spending 20million a player, because they know more about football than he does. They must want him out, but they don't dare remove him through fear of the reaction. At a club like United or even Chelsea he'd have been long gone. |

Think he's referring to the Gareth Barry situation, basically the two Americans told Benitez he wasn't being given the cash to sign someone who was similar age & not as good as Alonso.
Pretty poor situation when 2 people who know nothing about football, know better than the club manager. |

Basically, they are desperate. They'll willingly bend over and let their club get fucked over just for some success. As the following true image depicts:

He's a good coach but possibly not a good manager in the PL mould. I don't know if he had a DoF at Valencia to do the transfers for him - Ramos' success at Sevilla was at least 50% due to Monchi getting in good players.
