From Physioroom.com

W Szczesny Back Injury 16th Oct 11
B Sagna Broken Leg Dec 11
J Djourou Hamstring Injury no return date
T Vermaelen Achilles Tendinopathy 29th Oct 11
S Squillaci Calf Muscle Strain no return date
J Wilshere Ankle/Foot Injury Jan 12
V Diaby Ankle/Foot Injury 8th Oct 11

That's 5 defenders, plus their first choice keeper, out.

But yeah their squad should be like ours, no excuse for Wenger there.

It might well set us back a decade. If we don't get CL football, you won't see players wanting to join us anymore, and we might well just slip further and further away from the top. It's been an unmitigated disaster, and it's just offensive when Gazidis comes out and says that we got the majority of the targets on our list. Since when did our transfer target list include Benayoun or Mertesacker?

Out of curiosity what would you say is Arsenal's strongest back 4?

They don't have one. Wenger ridiculed the need for one because he has '32 years of coaching experience'.

If I were a gooner fan, I would be extremely concerned by this Hodgsonism.

As it stands - Gibbs, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Sagna. Currently, one of them is fit, and he's the most injury prone of the lot.

That feels like an 'international injury'. God help them if he misses any Arsenal games.

Santos was signed because Gibbs is inexperienced, so strange to see Gibbs starting and Santos sitting on the bench.

I don't think Wenger planned on signing a leftback to begin with. He got shocked into signing one.

You're one to talk, you needed Atkinson to get a win against Everton

No, Santos was signed because we needed two senior left-backs. Wenger realised it would just be suicide to go into a season with an injury-prone Gibbs and Jenkinson.

Too early to judge. Seems like he might live up to the reputation of being dodgy defensively and good going forward.

Why do you get so offended over Arsenal?

Oh and anyway, injuries won't be the cause of Arsenal's failure to finish top4, their pathetic transfer business will.

Not that it has any kind of relevance here.

two way street, imo. They can say they have bad luck with injuries (though I've read some blogs placing the blame for this squarely at wenger's feet as it has been going on for years now), but equally so their injuries only serve to expose how weak their squad has become because of their transfer strategy.

Injuries cannot be blames for the situation the find themselves in. Every tom dick and harry knows that vermaelen has been injury prone for a while. Same with RVP. But, wenger refuses to address that. they act surprised and moan about their luckl when vermaelen gets injured and will do the curse their luck with injuries again when RVP has his customary time out.

Every team has their share of injuries. some are prepared for it with good squads while some try and paper over the cracks and are eventually found out.

how can one explain Jerkinson as the only cover for your RB slot? or am i mistaken here and they actually have someone to cover for sagna?

He's clearly supposed to be an upgrade on Gibbs.

I'm not sure why does Arsenal gets the liberty to use the injury excuse every time. I mean if you've players like Vermaelen, Diaby, Djourou and RVP in your squad, then you're bound to get injuries. Every year they seem to have an injury crisis, I'm sure there is a reason for that.

Arsenal have won just 5 of their last 19 league games, whilst Spurs have won 6 of their last 8 league games ... and that includes beating Liverpool both home and away.

And since last season’s Carling Cup final you've gained just 19 points from a possible 57.

Bury your head in the sand if you wish and write it all off as just bad luck and refereeing injustice. But the rot goes deep.

Clearly not. Gibbs is deemed to be the future, whilst Santos is supposed to be a reliable back up.

Rated extortionately highly by the club, and looks promising when he's not injured. But he is injured a lot, as most of our players are.

Gibbs is deemed to be the future, hence Santos is deemed to be the present.

Christ.

A player can only be the future if he plays in the present.

Wenger was obviously planning to go with Gibbs but decided he wasn't good enough, hence why he tried to sign Enrique.

When he failed to sign Enrique he signed Santos instead.

Oh the irony.

It was widely reported that Arsenal were in talks with Enrique's representatives.

I distinctly remember one article in The Times for a start.

I love the way that you choose to believe things in the papers about Arsenal, but you wouldn't if it was United related. We were never in for him.

Agree with this, saw it on a few sites elsewhere.

I think Arsenal's reluctance to buy early undermined their hand in the transfer market. Once they sold Nasri and Fabregas, clubs started jacking up the prices. They should have gone for the likes of Mata as early as January of last season.

This is the thing. They should have been looking for players like this to supplement the likes of Nasri and Fabregas, not replace them.

To be fair, Nasri was leaving the moment City waved pound notes at him. As for Fabregas, people have been predicting his departure as long as 4 years back. Your broader point still stands though
