The WH board calling off Sidwell's move makes more sense now. O'Neill may have been in the frame and it's pretty clear he didn't much fancy Sidwell in his time at Villa.

I don't think they are that poor at all. When you look at Blackpool at the moment or even Bolton you see what a really good manager can do with a decent but uninspiring bunch. Now, I certainly don't think that being 'England internationals' makes the likes of Green, Upson or Cole better players than they are - but they are better players than they've been under Grant. Parker is the exception.
If Grant could get the best out of them, I don't expect them to be top 8, but they should at least be a few points ahead of the relegation zone, especially considering their fixtures list - They played Wolves and Fulham twice (two teams they've got a good chance of geting points against), they played Wigan at home, Blackpool at home, West Brom at home. Instead, they are bottom, having played 1-2 games more than everyone else. |

I still don't understand why O'Neill would go there?
Surely Aston Villa to West Ham is a step down. And if he left Villa because of a meddling owner then one can't help but feel Sullivan, Gold and Brady are worse. I thought he'd be looking out for a higher job. Very weird decision from O'Neill if true. |

Obviously West Ham have money trouble, but part of the equasion is what the owners expect. If Lerner expected better than the sixth position he got him at Villa while selling players, it was totally unlikely and too much to demand. If West Ham spend less but also expect less, it makes sense. |

The latest news is that Grant will now remain as manager "for now"

I know he will be compensated etc, but it costs fuck all extra to treat him with respect. |

Does 'for now' mean the next twenty minutes?
How did the O'Neill stuff reach the BBC today anyway. West Ham source leak it? If not, it's hardly their fault. I guess morally they shouldn't be negotiating a currently filled position, but in fairness, they are significantly upping the standard of candidate in Martin O'Neill, Grant is bottom of the table, West Ham do look shambolic at times despite having a decent squad, and it's difficult to argue the club isn't doing the right thing for their long term fortunes A lot being said for Grant's dignity, at some point that means resigning and if he so wishes bringing a constructive dismissal case against the club |

The way the BBC were speaking this morning was very odd, well very odd now that Avram is still at West Ham. On RTE they said O Neill had cooled on the idea today and that tomorrows back page headlines which will be dominated by O Neill and Keane at West Ham (well over here anyway) were all a bit premature.
Manner of the sacking aside, does he know anything about football. How did he become such a high profile figure? |

Connections and ability to befriend the right people. The Israeli mafia at Portsmouth brought him in as a 'Director of football', so he got his foot in the door in England. He used the time to get connected to Abramovich, and within a year he's 'Director of football' at Chelsea and then manager. He gets sacked eventually, but he's already part of English football, his name is known, whenever a job is available his name is mentioned. And eventually he does get jobs.
Now, will it last? If he blows the West Ham job - which is what he's done so far - then maybe not. But once you become a part of the football culture, it gives you a chance. It's not as if we've not seen some bad managers given one, two or three jobs. Eventually people discover you're not good enough, though. Question is when. |

Well I for one hope Grant succeeds for the simple fact he has been treated like shite by West Ham and everyone everywhere is writing him off. I like an underdog, hope he pulls off a miracle and keeps them up.

Some very good signings in January. Stoke must be kicking themselves for not taking Ba when they had the chance.

He's leaving Partizan after a few months. Won the Serbian title (well, he took over in mid season with a 10 point lead...), but lost all three matches against Red Star, two of them in the cup. His agent insists he has offers in England. I can't see someone being so stupid again...
