It was a stupid comment, but I think people are overreacting. In fact, the more I think about it, it becomes obvious that people are definitely overreacting. Morally, to use the Heysel tragedy to make a quip against an annoying Liverpool fan in that way is no worse than Richard Dawkins or Stephen Fry using the child abuse scandals of recent years to take a dig at the Catholic Church.

They're too old now to be worth listening to. It's like reading a 2010 newspaper.

No, yours is a stupid equivalence. Barclay was reacting to a trivial dig with an totally unwarranted, out-of-context slur.

Do another one soon then. Over breakfast, preferably. Or have a giant piece of cake like James Richardson does.

It was a big commitment from Mike to host it, take part in the rabbit, edit it and package it.

Nobody is bothered about the quip being out-of-context, unintelligent or whatever else, it is simply a case of football fans objecting to a footballing tragedy being used as a retort. If the Tweet had been in context, we would have seen the same objection. My point is that using a tragedy as a retort to a trivial dig is perfectly acceptable in other areas, as long as the quip is against someone/something that the person believes is responsible for the tragedy rather than the victim.

First you're making the unwarranted assumption that anyone other than the police was responsible (see reports passim). Secondly even if it were true that Liverpool supporters contributed to the tragedy (which is rubbish IMO) - it's a pretty vile point to make in the context of a knockabout discussion on twitter.

I haven't made an assumption on any such thing, and I certainly won't be making a case either way.

Barclay has made an assumption, and he has used that assumption to make a frivolous dig. Whether or not he is right in his assumption is entirely irrelevant, as the objection here is simply the use of a tragedy as a retort, not the accuracy of it.

What a simplistic and a wrong comparison. What Dawkins and Hitchens argue is that scriptures and/or the power with the church or any religious body is causing such unfortunate incidents and that not enough is being done to stop it.

Heysel was an abberation. It doesn't happen every other week.

There's a whole untapped market here for situation based foootball discussion.

I would like to see Pogue, Jopub and Plech discuss the recent inconsistency of punishments issued for dangerous tackles, whilst wrestling a grizzly bear and dressed as clowns.

Patrick Barclay Heysel Slur - Discussion

He's admitted he was in the wrong but now they all want an apology. I thought that club didn't do apologies?

Great, so no need for Jopub to change his clothing then.

He should issue an indirect apology with the recognition of someone who hasn't said anything wrong.

Yes, but only after spending a few months claiming he never said anything and that in anycase it wasn't offensive in the context he said it.

From that RAWK thread:

But we are a bit wary of people like Roy arriving from London and a bit wary of outsiders in general. But is that really so surprising when the rest of the country has treated us with the the sort of bias and prejudice that would see them locked up if they tried it with people of a different colour.
Playing the race card now?

Here's a powerful peace from respected journo and scouser, Tony Evans, on Heysel.

Hope it's ok to link this, mods.

Regardless of whether scousers caused the deaths or not, it was still a very crass comment. He just comes across as an odious cretin every time I see him on tv, so it's no surprise he said something so vulgar.

Agree with this. But also, that article linked to above is indeed very powerful.

Apologies if this is the wrong thread to bump, it was more up to date than the other.

I really wonder if anything they, or the papers say, is actually true about Club Football. Like that independent article about Rooney being forced out hours before he signed his extension, they just dont have a clue.

It's just echoes bouncing around the newspapers and twitter, who has a clue about whats going on with Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas, or Roman Abramovich. They pretend they have any clue about whats going on in their minds, and they really really don't.

There is this one guy on here at the moment cutting through the rubbish, but I don't know his name.

Edit:
Spoiler

This guy is alright.

Love me some Holt. Hoping he makes it to Euros. What a story. Went from being a used car salesman to non-league football, working his way up to the PL and then a shot at a major tournament?

I wonder how many players can say that? (real question)
