Can I just ask... was the reason my original OP was swapped out for Plech's because I swore, or because he had a decent pun lined up?

Because his thread was in the correct forum, I merged the two together but left his as OP, there was nothing really wrong with yours, and had his not existed, I would have moved in to this forum and left it at that.

And also because Plech acts like a bit of a bender when he doesn't get his daily dose of green smilies.

But mostly whatever silly excuse Hectic made up.

Regarding the colour scheme, blue and yellow are complimentary. So blue, yellow, black and white makes perfect spectral sense.

As for the layout, just like everything else these days, it looks to have been designed for the gormless ipad generation.

Trying to be minimal but not succeeding. The thing is, if you're going to do a minimalistic typographic layout you need to pay extra attention to structure, a strong baseline grid, limiting yourself to certain font sizes for hierarchy, etc.

I find a use of complementary colours often doesn't work well on a screen. The contrast becomes too strong, and can even produce irritating after-images.

In this case I find it especially irritating becasue they've used very subdued colours in many areas (e.g. the Headlines section). Combined with their choice of font(s) and little use of bolding, the yellow headers pop out against a sea of hard-to-navigate blandness.
Using this page as an example --

BBC Sport - Football

you get far too much emphasis on the yellow areas and the photos, giving the page a hack & slash, cobbled-together appearance, even if the basic layout isn't awful in and of itself. Unless they're actually aiming for a 'glue & scissors fanzine'/'Angelfire fan site' retro look, it's an abomination.

Blue is used to indicate any live content - live text commentaries, live video or audio, or live scores. The shade chosen is vibrant and energetic - to reflect the nature of live sport. It compliments the yellow BBC sport brand and is of similar hue, and each is easily distinguished when side by side.
It's f***ing ugly!

The interface may get a bit of getting used to but I think it's great for the most part and so will everybody find eventually. The new live text commentry is great.

I'm not sure:

Spoiler

There's no way it would be in red anyway as that colour is used for the news pages.

I'm not sure what to make of it being in green either:

Spoiler

As with most changes, people will get used to the redesign. One thing I do hope that they change is the use of the highlight colour blue on the news banners among other things when they've got live football/other sport going on. Other than that I like it.

tbh, it's absolutely awful. The worst looking design I've seen for a football site since dial-up.

I think every site should go vintage for a week or something. I hate these updates, it's all tailored to iPad browsing, and it's annoying. iPad apps should be tailored iPad browsing, not the sites themselves.....or at least not yet.

You're not. After using it for a little while and seeing how it works on a normal footballing day. I'm starting to "get it".

It looks very clean and emphasises visuals over text compared to the previous design. They've also made it more functional with a lot of easily accessible video and other content right where you need it.

If I've got it in another tab and then I check it. It will refresh but without some info. Basic updates look fine but big ones like currently 'RED CARD Stoke's Robert Huth' just has that, no info underneath. I have to refresh the page for it to come up. Same with goals. Pain in the arse.

I love it, a lot better than the previous one which was all small and stuck to the grid to much, this one is more dynamic. I'm used to where everything goes now, much better visually. Cracking looking site.

I'm of the same opinion. I'm a web designer, so usually I hate so many sites - but other then the header, there isn't a lot that I hate. The editorials are well laid out, and the live events are an improvement.

Thing is, I hated the old one so in my eyes anything would be an improvement.

It's very annoying that they've used a sort of blue colour which is very similar to the text highlighting colour in Google Chrome. This alone makes me hate it.

This link is still available to the old site: BBC SPORT | Football | Premier League | Top Scorers

But as far as I can see there's no top scorer page for the new website.
