Riera was second choice to Barry who the owners wouldn't allow Rafa to buy. Arbeloa was second choice to Alves, Zenden was second to Simao (if my memory serves me corectly) etc.

I can't recall a time when your owners have ever blocked Ferguson from buying a player and asked him to settle for the cheaper option. I reckon this is the point Rafa is making, although in fairness I think he's had enough money to put up at least a challenge by now.

Amazing that a couple of dumb yanks are more clued up about players than Rafa. They were probably stunned that he spent £20M on Keane.

In 2003 our board wouldn't cough up an extra few mill for Ronaldinho and we had to settle for Ronaldo.

No it's because Liverpool's squad has more crap in it than United's squad.

It was Benitez who bought the deadwood players though. His transfers/player purchases are awful. He's bout so many average players and no real flair players with the exception of Torres.

For example, Liverpool are lacking width and pace, so he buys Riera for around £8m, when an extra £1m would have got him someone like Wright-Philips. They fail to sign Barry for £18m but someone like Queresma goes to Inter for £15.

I'm not saying these players would want to go to Liverpool but what I am saying is that there are plenty of quality players about who would be cheaper that what Benitez has spent on average players. His obsession with holding midfielders if retarded. Has no-told told him that you can get creative central midfielders too.

Over-rated manager with dull style IMO.

And he won't be. £32m is inclusive of his 2 year wages during his loan making him about £22m. Which is cheap because there's no risk, if he's shite we release him after 1 year, if he's good we test drive for another year if we want to.

Benitez is merely, belatedly jumping on the "poor, poor pitiful us" Scouse bandwagon that has been in overdrive for some time. In this scenario United are always bracketed with Chelsea as if there is some valid comparison in their wealth and the way it was obtained.

" Plus I heard that Ferdinand and Vidic got new pockets. Did my defenders get a new pockets? Of course not. It is not fair to compare us with them unless there is some significant change in pocket's size of our club."

Well, their supporters already use the same arguments, so he knows they'll definitely buy it anyway. But he's doing this a bit early in the season. Maybe he's getting the jitters that even that precious 4th spot may be beyond them this time round.

He was talking his chances up at the start of the summer.

You can't sign players like Ngog, Reira, Dossena, and Degen and expect to challenge for the title.

These are the quality of players the likes of Middlesborough and Fulham sign.

They've bought him last season. I think the fee was about £19m.

So, Liverpool's total spending is £209m (based on your figures).

The BIG difference is, when Benitez doesn't get his target, he goes out and spend x millions on mediocre players.

When Sir Alex doesn't get his target, he waits until he gets him, see Hargreaves, see Berbatov.

Benitez has spent massive amounts on crap. He is a tranfser spaz.

Maybe he looks at Wenger who has a reputation of buying low priced relatively unknown players and turning them into high value stars. The difference is Wenger appears to know what he is doing in that respect Benitez clearly does not

The sad thing about that is it really could be Benitez saying it.

They've still spent the most net of any team in the Premier League Era.

Benitez has signed something like 50 players in his 4 years.

It isn't our fault you don't know what to do with your money, Manuel.
