Best CMs in the league

Who are your picks for the best central midfielders in the league this season?

And no, I don't want your Silva's or your Mata's, they're not midfielders, certainly not central midfielders.

For me, if I had to pick three, it would probably be Modric, our own Michael Carrick, and either one of Parker/Song.

Yaya Toure should be in there

Modric and Toure stand above the others. Carrick is in with a shout for 3rd given his form this season, but with everyone fit I'd prefer Wilshere.

I don't think so. He was better last season IMO.

Fades out of matches around the 60-minute mark, and has not been very good at all in their crunch matches.

Parker has to be up there, he has settled in well at Spurs. Also Ramsey has looked good at times for Arsenal.

But Tiote has stood out like a sore thumb with some excellent displays for Newcastle.

Yaya Toure, Cabaye, Modric

Think that's a midfield that compliments each other quiet nicely.

This season, the OP says. This season, Wilshere has been playing Playstation, while Touré has been busy complaining about clear cut free-kicks, and hacking people down because he's too tired to track them properly.

Modric, Carrick, Toure, Meireles

In that order.

Meireles? Really?

Some of you ought to have a word with yourselves. No wonder you think our CM is inferior to pretty much everything else when you mention people like Cabaye and Tioté.

Cabaye has been a good signing, but come on, he's not been outstanding the way a Michael Carrick or a Modric has been this season.

And I won't agree with anyone claiming Yaya Touré has had some sort of brilliant season. In fact, I think James Milner has been much, much better when deployed in CM.

The best midfielders this season have been:

Carrick
Toure
Cabaye
Parker
Modric

In no particular order.

Carrick's been brilliant this season, though i expect it to go widely unnoticed from fans of other clubs.

Cabaye hasn't been as good as the plaudits he's been receiving would suggest. Very little of their play actually goes through him

Aye, as I said I can only think of Modric who has a real claim to have been better. Carrick's consistantly been excellent since being drafted into the team.

Ramires is very good, he's just in a really poor Chelsea side right now.

In terms of youth, it has to be Wilshire.

Overall? Easily Modric, then Yaya, then probably Carrick (on current form)

This. Newcastle hardly utilizes their central midfield, in comparison to other teams. Him and Tioté gets stuck in a lot, especially Tioté, but on the ball they are both average and not particularly impressive.

Cabaye gets a lot of plaudits for a couple of youtube-moments. Some great goals, and THAT pass against Norwich for Ba(pass of the season, honestly, watch it).

We've also looked far more in control of our matches since his return. We were conceding far too many chances with the gung-ho style adopted at the start of the season as pleasing as it was on the eye teams were cutting right through us. Luckily we had a good keeper in the sticks.

The standard of CMs in the Premier League is laughably poor in comparison to La Liga.

This fucking season. Wilshere hasn't played. Ramires has been largely anonymous(due to playing in an incoherent Chelsea-side for the most part). Yaya has been.. well, good, but not outstanding. And inconsistant.

Like of Ramsey mentions here, he's hugely softened the blow of Wilsheres injury for Arsenal. Still not at the same level(but then again, he's not playing with Fabregas in his first proper season unlike Wilshere).

Modric is the clear answer though.

Ramsey has been at times good, at times he's look exhausted, and at times he's been shite(vs us for instance).

Also, he's almost played as a pure attacking midfielder this term.

For me, the pick of the bunch from Arsenal's midfield is clearly Song. Then Arteta, who's been good when he's been fit, albeit not sensational.

Mareiles?

He hasn't even been the best midfielder at Chelsea this season.

I'd say bar Mikel he's made a compelling case for being the worst. Why they signed him and confined McEachran to the bench... Oh my.

I mean, what excactly does he do? For all the criticism levelled at Carrick, Meireles is THE sideways passer in the league. He's just.. pointless, bar the 3-4 goals he pops up with from time to time. I'd rather have Fletcher, for instance, at least he does a job defensively and has something resembling drive and urgency.

Whoops, missed that.

Ramires has been really good, far better than the rest of Chelsea's midfielder. And Yaya is brilliant, City have been really poor without him.

Song is a good shout too.

Been fantastic for City this season - no coincidence that they've had a slide in form while he's been away.

Stilyan Petrov has been the best player in a terribly dull Villa-side for my money.

Ahhh a new caf myth has begun I see.

This is Toure, in what, the 85th minute or something, City down to 10 men, in a CRUNCH match.

Fading out?

People mention City's loss of form - but two of their worst performances this season, against City and Liverpool, which started the loss of form, was when he played in CM. And he was terrible in those matches.

Also, where was he at the Allianz when City needed him? Being dominated, is the answer.

In short, I don't buy into the Touré-hype. I don´t think he's got the stamina to play in CM in the PL, and perform consistantly well, and I think he's showed a shocking lack of dicipline in some of their key matches.

Well, prior to that I bet he was walking around not tracking runs for 5 minutes, due to being absolutely knackered. Look it's plain to see if you watch a match.

Added to my earlier post: Terrible against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Because I don't think he's been better than those 5 over the course of the season...

In seriousness, he's been very good this last 2 months or so and would be maybe 6th or 7th on my list. I think my above 5 have been better overall though.

He was doing well then got shifted into defence. When he came back into midfield he needed a few games to settle down then has been very good since then (whenever that was).

I also think that, for all the under rating of Carrick, when he puts in a good performance this forum over rates him quite a bit and it becomes an amazing performance.

I think he's not had a lot of Roy of the Rovers-performances, truly outstanding in that way, no. But he's consistantly been running games for us these last months, basically shoring up our team defensively after the City-match, then grown more and more into his now pivotal role at the heart of it all.
