Abedi Pele is considered one of their best ever players, won four Ligue 1s on the bounce with Marseille, was MOM in the 1993 Champions League Final, Africa's most decorated player, he was fucking awesome you clown.

He won the French league 4 times. Well fuck me that's some achievement.

Who decorated him, Idi Amin? And what the fuck does decorated mean, somebody gave him a medal of honour or did his front room up?

You're a fucking idiot.

Didn't Paul Rideout play for Bari some years back. Not sure how he did. Never forgiven him for the 95 cup final. Cnut.

Not a brit, but Robbie Keane had an inconspicuous spell at Inter as well.

How did Liam Brady do at Juventus? And how about Steve Archibald at Barcelona?

Brady was a massive hit at Juve. Don't think Archibald tore any trees up though, didn't he play alongside Lineker and Hughes under Venables.

So both Brady and Charles were hits at juventus. i would imagine they contract more Brittish or Irish players then. According to wikipedia it are the only two Brits to have ever played there.

I also stumbled upon a certain Clarke who played a season for Ajax in the 70's, he scored 37 goals there.

I also saw Stapleton played 4 games for Ajax

I can't believe it took until the 32nd post to mention John Charles.

Well done Topper.

Yes, Archibald was there with Sparky and FA Cup ears.

Didn't do too badly, scored 24 goals in 50-odd games.

gazza i think was a hit....not that he won anything but in the fact that even the miserable italiens would have to admit that he could really play football.

any other players come to mind who could be deemed a success??
John Charles, Beckham, Waddle, Hoddle, Lambert, Platt etc

The styles of the leagues have something to do with that...the Spanish league is very technically sound, while the Italians are very tactically sound and play at a slow tempo...and then you've got the fast paced physical premier league. Most of the Brits learn the English way of football and don't always find it as easy to adjust to the Spanish/Italian way of playing unless of course they're very good players themselves technically like Gazza at Lazio. There's no doubt the likes of Rooney and Joe Cole would excel in both Spain and Italy as they're great technically, but your average English player would rather stay in England...and then there's the huge amount of money and high wages in the premier league which is another deterrent to playing abroad...
