Tel To Ease White Hart Pain
Tottenham ready to offer Venables a return
From: NOTW By ROB SHEPHERD, 04/10/2008 SPURS are ready to offer Terry Venables a shock return to White Hart Lane. I understand senior figures at the club see former manager Venables as the perfect man to replace under-fire sporting director Damien Comolli. There has been speculation over Comolli’s position following Tottenham’s fraught transfer window dealings which saw them lose strikers Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov but miss out on replacements Andriy Arshavin and Diego Milito. Sources at White Hart Lane believe Comolli will be gone before January’s window, leaving the way clear for an astonishing return for Venables. The former England boss, 65, was forced out of Spurs in 1993 after a bitter battle with Sir Alan Sugar. But Venables retains close links with Spurs and this week praised chairman Daniel Levy. He said: “I’ve got to know him over the years and got to like the way he thinks — and the dreams he had for Tottenham, too.” Levy backed Comolli against ex-boss Martin Jol a year ago. But that relationship now appears not to be as close with the agent Leon Angel becoming more involved in Tottenham’s transfer dealings. Key figures at Spurs believe Venables can work in tandem with Juande Ramos and he would be intrigued to discuss the possibility of a return — although there has been no contact. |
