Some of the renties claim that not only is Terry's poor form down to injury, but also as a result of him becoming England captain. Let us hope that the same does not apply to Rio!

He deserves it though in fairness despite the captain's armband meaning less and less in football nowadays.

Brilliant news. This will boost Ferdinand even further for the run in. The bloke has been in brilliant form and it is about time people realised that he is the man to build the English defense around. Now drop Terry and stick Woodgate in alongside Rio and you have the makings of a terrific combination.

Rio is great at bringing the ball out of the back and there is no better long range passing centre back than Woodgate in the country. International football is less about rough and tumble, last ditch defending (which is why the likes of Terry and Carragher get found out) and more about keeping the possession.

Well done Rio!

Interesting. Probably means neither Terry nor Gerrard are automatic picks.

Great news.

Iīd love to see him made full time captain when Capello makes that decision in September. To me heīs the best man for the job, heīs been a terrific leader for United all season even if he doesnīt always have the armband. Heīs also Englandīs best defender and IMO should have a steady place in the team, while Terry and Gerrard havenīt done enough to show they deserve that.

Captain Rio. Sounds good.

Great news for Rio and the right choice too as I can't see any of the other candidates being as much as an automatic pick as Rio is.

hey rio, after the game can you retrieve benzema from your pocket and tell him you'll let him go, but only if he signs for united in the summer?

Thanks.

he would have been our captain after nev, possibly england's captain too, if not because of the drug test incident.

Rio deserves to be selected as Captain for this game. He is a vocal player who also leads by example.

Think Capello is just rotating the captaincy, expect to see Terry leading us against the Yanks.

Yes! Go Rio! Hopefully now Terry and Gerrard will realize they are not guaranteed captaincy, and they should be sweating!

Maybe so. But I think it would be quite telling if Rio was selected as captain in a game of such magnitude (Stade de France vs France) and Terry got the armband against the relatively far weaker USA.

Sounds right, I've been asking for this one for awhile, get in there Rio and show them how to lead properly through example and words.

Great news for our Rio, may it all work out well for him tomorrow.

The media were so certain yesterday that it was Terry. Either a rather radical shift in policy, or Capello's team simply doesn't leak them good info like was the case under McClaren and Sven.
