Carvalho out for a Month, Deco also injured

Quote:
Deco joins fellow Portuguese on the sidelines

Chelsea have confirmed Ricardo Carvalho is out for up to four weeks, while Deco will be missing for a fortnight.

Carvalho was forced off in the early stages of Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday after picking up a knee injury.

Tests have shown that the Portuguese centre-half has strained a medial collateral ligament and will be sidelined for three to four weeks.

The 30-year-old will now miss several games for the Blues, starting with Wednesday's Carling Cup tie against Portsmouth.

He could also sit out the next two UEFA Champions League group games against CFR Cluj next week and Roma on 22nd October.

However, Chelsea will be hoping that Carvalho will be fit to return for the Premier League game at home to Liverpool on Sunday 26th October.

Meanwhile, Carvalho's fellow Portugal international Deco will be out for two weeks after being diagnosed with a tear in his upper thigh muscle.

Deco suffered the injury in the warm-up before Sunday's stalemate with United and was replaced in the starting line-up by Michael Ballack.

The playmaker is likely to sit out Chelsea's next four matches, but should return after the international break against Middlesbrough.

Will this affect them in any way?

Probably not, as Ballack and Alex are adequate cover.

Doubt it. They've got quality cover for both of 'em. As we found out on Sunday.

Makes shite of my FF team though

Possibly against Villa, but Stoke and Cluj won't put up much of a fight. Boro normally put up a good fight too so they might do well.

Alex can still make mistakes, and he will. He played a blinder on Sunday but he won't be that solid in every match.

Agreed, and Ballsack is struggling for fitness. I would take Carvalho and Deco over almost any defender and midfielder in the country.

Chelsea play Villa in a couple of weeks and Villa tend to play very well against them. Of their league meetings in the last two seasons Chelsea have drawn 3 and lost 1 and I could see Terry and Alex struggling against the pace of Villa's attack.

I wonder if Abramovic will storm out in a blubbing rich-boy huff this time.

The loss of Carvalho and Essien may prove huge. It will be intereting to see how well Terry performs without Carvalho.

He'll probably do well against Stoke since they only really offer an aerial threat, then once he is built up as a one-man defence again Agbonlahor will take him apart, hopefully.

Deco truly gives them something different in midfield. His creativity and passing ability is far superior to the rest of their squad. This'll probably see them becoming more direct and pumping more long balls up to Drogba.

Carvalho carried Terry throughout last season, and despite Alex having a decent game against us, it's definitely a significant drop in quality for their back four.

Has anyone noticed that Alex was in Curb Your Enthusiasm? In the episode where Larry buys his cleaning lady a bra and her boyfriend (Alex) gets angry and eventually chases Larry through a building only to step on a nail that was used in The Passion of the Christ?

It was blatantly Alex.

Agbonlahor will tear apart Terry. He's simply too fast for him. Also, Ballack struggles to get 60 minutes out of a game nowadays. I'm sure Chelsea can pull some random cover out of their ass as easily as Wenger gets French babies or Benitez makes up names.

Deco has been one of there better players IMO so they will miss him alot and Carvalho is just as good as Terry if not better.

Villa have caused Chelsea a lot more problems than that. Over the last four season Villa have taken more points off Chelsea than anybody, including United, Arsenal and Liverpool. On past form the games against Villa will be Chelsea's hardest of the season.

Having said that, I don't think Terry will be lying awake at night worrying about how he'll cope with the electrifying pace of John Carew.

He'll be worried when Carew brings Agbon into play.
