I suppose that's one difference between Chelsea and United...we have had tremendous success with Kids since 1936...and our worst period was when we went on a buying spree with Sexton and Atkinson...

We should institute a policy where we will play such players in cup matches and ever increasingly in the league - Ashley Cole is 30 though he is the sort of player who will play every single game and then suddenly retire, following which we would have to bring in someone quickly as opposed to a long term transitioning.
Ryan was very good when he was with us. Definitely prem quality, but Chelsea first team is questionable.

Michael Woods (21) has retired from football. He was one of the two 'tapped-up' Leeds players Chelsea had to pay £5m for as teenagers.

Chelsea had Docherty's babes back in the early 60s - they weren't always a complete bunch of cunts.

Skimming through this thread, I am delighted that Sturridge has been given his chance - I would chose him over Anelka, Drogba and Torres right now. Whilst he is on the right and looks very assured there he may move to the centre.

McEechran has had less chances than I thought he would, Meireles arriving last minute screwed him somewhat whereas Romeu looks to be a very exciting emerging talent.

Bertrand played away at Everton recently in our extra time carling cup game, that is our most difficult away game typically and he was flawless all game.

I though McEachran would have featured more by now... What's going on there?

Judging by his U21 performance he's no where near ready.

The Woods retirement talk was rubbish apparently.

Chelsea have a lot of players in the England age groups atm, they are doing something right at youth level, it's whether the patience is there to allow them to develop into first team players.

McEachran needs to go on loan in order to progress, just like Sturridge before him.

Bertrand should leave Chelsea......what is the point that he's a back up for Cole if he don't play if Cole is out.

They're just not willing to give a chance to their young players a lot of the time. They should realise that sometimes it does work, as it did with Sturridge.

Chelsea yoof surely? Jose, Big Phil, Ancelotti nor AVB seem interested in promoting from within, must be the transfer policy from the higher ups that negate any trust in the youth system!

Former Chelsea forward Borini is now a success at Roma

Fabio Borini left Chelsea last year, first for a loan spell at Swansea City (7 goals in 12 games) and then, at the end of his contract, to Parma.

He signed a five-year deal at the Stadio Ennio Tardini, but was then loaned out to Roma, who have since paid £3million to own 50 per cent of him.
Borini has so far scored six goals in 13 Serie A games as Chelsea's search for new strikers goes on.

What in Jesus' name were you lot thinking of letting such a talent go? He's so good, our best player in the last weeks and looks to be getting a senior call up for Italy now.

My favourite signing this year, Pjanic and Stekelenburg are a success too. He runs his heart out all day (When you see him clear the ball in our box then he gets to the other side of the field for our counter...iron lungs this lad has) and he has a nose for goals. He's sometimes a bit selfish but he's been improving every match.

Thank you Chelsea and Parma
It really looks like Arnesen's work was for nothing at the Stamford Bridge.

I have been watching out for Borini this year, I knew last year when he got no look in whatsoever when we were not scoring that he would leave and be a success elsewhere.

To be fair, he was offered a new contract while at CFC but turned it down because he wanted to return to Italy.

Chelsea's youth team yesterday won from 0-3 down to 4-3 and progressed to the FA Youth Cup Quarter Finals.

What's the general perception among Chelsea fans of the job Arnesen did there, now? A friend who follows the youth team really rates the work he did and thinks he was hard done by, but he has always seemed to be going against the grain with that opinion. I think he thought that the issues lay with the people above academy level whose job it was to integrate players into the first team. Arnesen's remit didn't go above academy level and the job he did with player recruitment and more importantly overhauling the youth coaching system, was a good one. The recent results seem to be bearing that out with a third youth semi-final appearance in four years.

From what I understood of it he was basically forced out, Chelsea completely low-balled him and instead of negotiating, kept him away from the first team. After the lack of opportunities given to young players of a similar quality, I think him leaving was always likely. He was quoted many times saying that he really wanted to play in the Premier League too, so it was a shame he'd already penned that contract with Parma before the loan came to an end, as by all accounts he really enjoyed his time at Swansea and could have gone up with them. I have family there so occasionally go to watch them, from his time in the Championship it was clear to see he was capable of playing several levels higher. The Chelsea supporting friend at the time of the loan said he should have been getting chances in the first team (it was just the contract dispute that was keeping him out). Watching Sturridge in AVB's systems this year and Borini's own performances starting from a wide forward position, you'd think he really would have done a job for you this season.

Still, fantastic to see him doing so well at Roma now, all the more impressive due to him not being one of Luis Enrique's favourites before the start of the season.

Arnesen seem's to rate some of the players at least since they followed him to Hamburg.

Arnesen is a great sporting director + scout.

His work at PSV Eindhoven was amazing - Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Stam, Robben, Cocu, Park, Gudjohnsen, Van Bommel, Zenden and Kezman.

Arnesen has done a very good job at Chelsea too but we all know the Chelsea managers in the last years haven't given the youth a chance.

That Arnesen works now for Hamburg is a massive Xmas gift for Hamburg.

The players in the Chelsea youth team have always been good footballers. They just never could make the transition to the first team. Mourinho always playing his full team in the Carling Cup never helped.

It's hard to criticise the last few managers too much because it seems to have been a win trophies or you're sacked situation. Very hard to put your faith in young players when your job is on the line if you don't have a very high win percentage.

Perhaps they'll change their outlook with the new Uefa financial rules and AVB will be given the chance to blood some of them (if he doesn't lose his job before the end of the season)

Arnesen on his time at Chelsea: "I never invested huge amounts of money in the youth sector. What has been written was mostly nonsense."

Arnesen on Chelsea: "I've never spent €5m for an 18-year-old. Here €250k, there €400k, but everything else wouldn't suit my philosophy."

Arnesen on CFC: "A young player shouldn't switch clubs for money. I have to say: At least in the yth sector we've been like a huge family."

Arnesen on Mourinho: "He's an absolute professional, but we never had to deal much with each other."

Arnesen on Chelsea: "Only after Hiddink joined, the cooperation with the first team got more intense."

Arnesen on Chelsea: "After Hiddink left, Roman told me to find a successor. I signed Anchelotti. The time with him was wonderful."

Arnesen: "I signed Sturridge from City. I told him if he trains well he'll rank among the top-20 of the squad & make 5 games in his 1st yr."

Arnesen: "For the 2nd yr, I predicted he'll rank among the top-16 & after that top-12. Footballers need a plan to orientate themselves by."
