Classic Photos

I've taken a few iconic photos, and had my artistic way with them, which basically meant colouring in the shirts of the players in question being worn. Did one for someone else on another site, he's having it blown up onto canvas for his front room. Think I fancy doing that, have to find the right photo mind. Anyway, great shots these, enjoy

Only problem with the Giggs one is the colour of the United shirt on the night, doesn't really suit for the purposes of this. Try and find another great Giggs shot and I'll do that. We wore red the night he ripped Juve apart at the Delli Alpi, might be some from that

Anyway, not to dissapoint, did you a couple of Zidane's instead!

Wouldn't it be very simple removing the colour from the rest of a coloured photo instead of colouring the shirt in a black/white photo?

Still good, though I don't think the white is suited for this type of thing. Needs to be a bright color.

The giggs one would look better if you gave his face the natural colour too instead of just the shirt.

Nice Brad, took some patience to do this, methinks. I wonder how they do this kind of thing on video clips, like the promos you see before a game...

This is a fantastic effect called Selective Colorisation.

To do these pictures, you basically convert a color picture into black & white, and then layer this b&w image on top of the color image.

You then 'color' over the areas you want to be their original color with a transparent brush. This makes the area transparent so that you see the original color below.

This method is actually very straight forward - adding color to a black and white image is much more difficult since you have to do all the shades yourself.

There's a great tutorial here:

http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Selective_Color/

You can I think follow this process in Photoshop, but for those who don't have this program, you can download GimpShop. Despite it's incredibly dodgy sounding name, this is basically a free art package written in Open source so it can be freely distributed. It is designed to have a similar feel to Photoshop and can be downloaded here:

Quality pictures Brad - be good to get some hi-res images. I'll have a search on Getty later today and see what I can come up with too.

Here's one I did following our thumping of Roma - I didn't put the image together, I just played about with the coloring.

I used the lasso tool to map Henry's outline, selected it's inverse and desatured it. It was pretty simple..

I always find the lasso tool to be a pain - I guess I'm not using it properly, but it often seems to struggle to accurately follow the outline that I want it to.

Any advice?
