Clattenburg banned from buggering up football matches

Ref Clattenburg hit by suspension

Referee Mark Clattenburg has been suspended pending enquiries into reports regarding his alleged debts.

The Football Association and referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Ltd acted after allegations relating to debts of companies connected to him.

Clattenburg was set to take charge of the FA Community Shield clash between Manchester United and Portsmouth.

But the County Durham official has been replaced for Sunday's curtain-raiser to the new season by Peter Walton.

A joint statement from the FA and PGMO read: "PGMO is aware of media reports concerning alleged debts incurred by companies connected to referee Mark Clattenburg.

"It has been decided he will not officiate any matches pending enquiries into the background to these reports.

"The FA has also decided to appoint Peter Walton as referee for Sunday's FA Community Shield between Manchester United and Portsmouth in place of Mark Clattenburg."

A PGMO spokesman added: "It is in the best interests of Mark Clattenburg and the game that these reports are fully investigated and, during that time, he will not referee any matches.

"Mark Clattenburg is one of England's leading referees and we hope to resolve this matter swiftly."

Earlier this week, the Newcastle Chronicle reported that Clattenburg's company MC Electrical Retail NE Ltd has been wound up by Newcastle County Court over a £59,589 debt.

Couldn't they just suspend him for being shit at refereeing?

he is awful even in preseason. Send him down back to the Championship, i'd rather see Uriah Rennie again than him.

He's not as bad as Rob Styles, in my opinion. Steve Bennett can be pretty bad as well.

He's the worst referee I remember seeing, but he is being suspended for the wrong reasons. This is irrelevant to his refereeing career.

Obviously he didn't get paid enough in that Merseyside derby to wipe out his business debts.

The strange thing is, I vividly remember him reffing one of our games in his third or fourth game in charge and being fantastic. Didn't really notice him again for a while but ever since then he's been terrible.

I have a feeling this is a really stupid question but...... what have his debts got to do with the way he referees?

Or is it something as obvious as he's more likely to take a bung if he's in the red?

Yes. As a professional referee his contract will allow the FA to look at outside financial interests, I'm sure.

Steven Gerrard's best friend is allowed to referee an Everton match for the first time in five years since cheating Liverpool to that 2007 derby victory.

Moyes and Clattenburg to renew acquaintances... it will be anything but cordial | Mail Online

That match will be moved anyway if Liverpool make the Carling Cup final: Who will finish 4th this season?

I think.

Clattenburg is now one of the best refs when you compare him with Atkinson, Foy, Dowd and the other fuck-ups.
