The people moaning about Evans having lapses in concentration, switching off or giving the ball away needlessley(what with Evans's 97 % passing accuracy or something crazy like that), I really do wonder what our fans would say if this lunatic played CB for us.
Two times in the first half, he pointlessly smacked the ball into Rooney and Giggs facing their defence with Welbeck and Young on the spring, from a random position. And he completely lost track of Rooney when Valencia played him in behind. Also, for some of the controversial decisions, his positioning was all over the place, and then he topped it off with losing Hernandez for the goal(not his worst mistake on the night.) I said it from the first day I saw him, the guy is a liability and need to learn basic defending or be shipped out ASAP. Not a defender at all. |

His criticism is over the top. He is going to be a very class defender in a few years. The main chink in his armour is concentration as our weekend game vs Chelsea showed.

It's his basic lack of understanding of the game. He just doesn't have any clue whatsoever of where to position himself, when to close down the striker, when to let him go, and he doesn't pay attention at all to what his teammates or opponents are doing. The Gary Neville-comparison is actually really, really apt. He rushes into tackles, out of position, and randomly tries to take the ball forward when the climate of the game says he should just keep it. And he has those brainfarts you refer to as well. Look at the number of times the Chelsea CB's are split instead of keeping their line, when someone runs at them. Often, Luiz will be caught in no mans land, in between the attacker running at him, and the player making a run in behind. He just doesn't know what to do when presented with a defensive dillemma. Sure, he's quick, strong physically and has a good touch. But he's also rash, and commits stupid fouls when he could easily have shepherded people out of a dangerous area, or simply nicked in and stolen the ball. He can't read what's happening in front of him, and as such often ends up kicking someone down due to coming into the tackle too late. He's just an allround poor defender, and there's just too many flaws, down to the very basics, for me to comprehend how he's going to become a decent PL defender, let alone a good top 4 one. He's almost like the Bebe of defending. |

Back to Luiz, This is what I meant when I say his criticism is over the top. Against United he made 2 major errors. One to let Hernandez get away tos core the 3rd. Another when he passed the ball to Rooney. Other than that he was playing very, very well. But the way people are having a go at him and his performance against us one would think he was the reason we scored 3 against Chelsea and was the worst player on pitch all game long. |

He passed the ball to Rooney in space, running at the defence, for no apparent reason, and then did excactly the same only to Giggs later. That is poor judgement and lack of composure. The mistake for Hernandez-goal wasn't even close to being his worst of the night. What about the time he for no reason went walkabout, pushing up on Rooney in midfield when there was no chance Rooney would get the ball, before being turned and caught as Valencia played Rooney in behind? Scholboy defending, which should've led to a goal. Again, stay in position, and nothing happens there. What about his entirely unnecesarry push on Evans, again for no apparent reason, in the box, which should've led to a penalty if we hadn't already got two on the night? Rash, unnecesarry, and lucky not to be punished. What about him being caught entirely in no mans land when Giggs threaded through Welbeck early on? Stay in line with the defense, and he's covering for Cahill there. But he didn't, because he didn't have a clue about Welbeck's run. Again, poor positioning. Those are just three examples of the top of my head, and it's quite frankly shocking for a supposed £23 million defender. He's 24 years old, not some 16-year old straight out of the academy. Playstation indeed. |
