Do managers listen to pundits?

Some of the detail Gary Neville, and once upon a time Andy Gray, go into after having time to disect a game has got me thinking.

Obviously no manager would admit it, but how much attention do you think they pay when someone on TV is highlighting their own or another teams weaknesses?

Neville got me thinking tonight as he spend a good while picking City apart and exposing their weaknesses during his version of the last word.

I would think clubs employ people to do that kind of job, rather than waiting for Gary to point out flaws.

I would think considering other people's opinions doesn't necessarily make someone a crap manager.

Obviously they're a lot better informed than pundits and most of what they hear will be considered rubbish by them, but here and there they may pick a valuable tidbit.

Mourinho was a pundit in Portuguese TV during Euro 2004 and he was a joy to hear.

Those that Neville said most managers worth their salt would have known it as well, just that some are better speaker than most.

It's like English, everybody speaks it but not everyone can teach

I'd expect most manager would have done the same anaylsis themselves anyway. And big clubs likely have a team just to analysis the game. So listening to the pundits would just be hearing a much less detailed version of what they already know

Most clubs have pay people to do that job for them already.

They have their own tactical analysts that help coaches and managers to analyse what their own teams or opponents tactical weaknesses are.

Neville had nice clips to illustrate his point but even someone like myself can see the issues well before they are told by a pundit, so I dont believe it'll be news to Mancini that having Silva playing "on the left" or "on the right" when really he just wanders into the middle all game is going to leave you exposed down his side defensively. But having that information doesn't mean you can fix it, instead I'm sure he just accepts that its going to happen and picks him for what he gives the team and what he can do offensively, "making up" for what he doesnt do off the ball.

I think they'll listen to the extent that they'll be mildly irritated if there is criticism, and maybe boosted if there is praise. That's human nature, I guess.

Indeed. In fact most of the stuff they pick up on is only really useful retrospectively. A Manager and his scout will be looking much closer for strengths and weaknesses their own team will have to watch and be able to exploit.

Take this weekend on MOTD, Hansen pointed out RVP's defensive work at set pieces, how would that help a team like Villa this weekend? As if we are going to deploy Van Persie so deep for their set pieces. It was nice to see the work he did for that game but it means fuck all for Paul Lambert this weekend.
