England - So much for change...

I thought we were going to get players picked on performances and good form ? It doesn't matter how big a name you are, you will play if you are in form, this excited me, I thought, at last, a manager who will reward players for playing well, and not for having a big name.

Then, what do we get....

Beckham
Terry
Hargreaves
Downing
Owen
Crouch
Walcott

What have any of these done in the last few months to earn a place in the England squad, let alone a start ?

All this while players like Green, Woodgate, Young, Agbonlahor, Bentley, Carrick, Defoe etc are either left on the bench or not even in the squad!

It's already plainly obvious that not much will change, and that we'll get the same players, the same team, the same results.

No, I don't expect us to win the World Cup, to be honest, I don't even expect us to beat France, we simply aren't good enough. But, I do expect players to be selected on form, not name. Yet, after just two games, it seems that won't happen. To be honest, Terry will probably even keep the captaincy.

Exactly, I think Sam#1 has just revealed the problem already through his own thread. Way too much pressure and too much criticism.

What ?

I said I don't expect us to beat France. I probably wouldn't expect to beat them if Capello had been in charge 5 years, our players aren't good enough.

You couldn't just keep this to the match thread?

Parts of Sam's argument I agree with. I expected Capello to be slightly less conservative than he has been.

FFS, either understand the thread properly, or don't post.

I don't expect us to win World Cups or beat teams like France, I do however, expect players to be selected on current form, like we were told would happen, not because they have a big name or have played for England before.

However, even after 2 matches, it's already apparent that that won't happen.

Owen has scored in his last two games, and Downing has been playing well for Boro.

I'd wait til you're further than a match and half into his term before you start throwing your toys out of the pram...

Owen has been shit, ok, he's scored 2 goals, but Defoe has 6 in 3, while Young and Agbonlahor have been terrific all damn season, do they get a look in ? No, of course not. Because he is Michael Owen, he plays. Christ, Kitson is the leading English scorer this season and he plays for Reading, will he get a chance ? Of course not.

Downing has done nothing to deserve and England call up.

I was hoping Kitson would get some kind of a chance. He deserves it on paper. As for Agbonlahor, did you know he hasn't scored at all in 2008. Don't think he is a striker but I wouldn't mind seeing a front three of Agbonlahor - Rooney - Young playing.

So you would rather have Kitson than Owen. Ok then.

Four of the 7 'should not be starting' players didn't start.

In the squad, have come on (Well Walcott hasn't, but why the fuck is he in the squad ahead of Young, Agbonlahor, Defoe.....?)

Errrm, yes he is.

And he's also the leading English scorer this season. That's despite playing for Reading and being Ginger.

He's been a regular starter all season when fit, then Coppell shuffled the pack and played Long vs City. He was shit, but scored, so kept his place (it's part of Coppell's stupid philosophy). He then played the next 2 matches and did fuck all. As a result, he was dropped and Kitson is now back in the team.

Trust me, when it comes to Reading, I know what I'm talking about.

That was a disappointing result. England should have performed better than that. Possession play has definitely improved but at the expense of a cutting edge. Personally there needs to be more energy put back into the game again.

We're two friendles in to the Capello era, have a little patience.

I'd reserve judgement till after we begin 2010 qualifying.
