We'll play as strong a side as possible. Benitez will want to get a trophy as soon as possible and knows that if the boo boys can sing "...champions of the world, we know what we are" it'll go some way to improving his popularity.

Chelsea not winning this is nigh on impossible, but Rafa is a man who can achieve impossible things, as evidenced by the Inter debacle

Nigh on impossible not to beat Corinthians? I guess you have not seen them (or Chelsea for that matter) play recently.

As strong as possible. We're going over there, may as well do our best to win it.

I personally don't like the 4-2-3-1 as our "2"s are not suited to their roles and the only "1" we have is, well, shite.

They didn't have Luiz at the back though.

I would rather this be like 2000 and a group play format with top club from each group going to a final, and a third-placed match for runners up if they want (i.e. more money).

Any group system, in any competition, in any sport, where only the top team goes through, never works!

As an example the 1993 Champions League had that system, and Milan won all 6 games as Porto and PSV quickly had nothing to play for.

It's a nice idea but no, it's such an uneven competition. No interest in it at all, and when we played in it I attached no more importance to it than I did a friendly. I have more interest in the charity shield to be honest.

What a weird Champions League was that. Many people moan, but the fact is that some very daft things were tried in the past.

In the following year there was a group stage like that but they decided to add a semi-final stage so the runners up of the group could progress...

...but the semi-finals were a single-legged tie in the home ground of the first classified

We lost in Nou Camp then.

Of course I care. It is a great competition, I find it really interesting that the champions of each continent get together to compete for the title "World Champions".

I just wish that it would be bigger/more prestigious. On a personal level I rank this as the third most important trophy, after the PL and CL. Which I am probably all alone in thinking here! So I really hope that Chelsea fail in Japan, would hate to see them win it.

Actually one of my first toughts after the CL final was "fuck chelsea's going to japan to compete for the Club World Cup"

If they were on Sky then they'd get a lot more attention.

You only need to have been at Cobham, Chelsea's training ground, over the last few months to see the level of interest from Brazilian media. Some have stayed on in London since the Olympics just to cover Chelsea, European champions, who everyone supposes will be Corinthians' opponents come the Club World Cup final on Sunday in Yokohama.

What confuses the Brazilian media is the lack of interest from their English counterparts in this week's tournament. During Rafa Benitez's pre-match press conference for the Nordsjaelland match, one Brazilian reporter asked him plaintively: "Do you ever think you'll be asked a question about the Club World Cup that isn't from a Brazilian journalist?"
Quote:
According to the official Uefa website, there were more Brazilians (76) in the Champions League group stages this year than any other nationality. That includes France (66), Spain (63), Germany (47) and Portugal (41). There were more Argentines (32) than Englishmen (31), a statistic that points to some pretty depressing side-effects to our all-conquering Premier League.

Likewise actually, ridiculous thing to say. They will probably never play a South American or European team, so its no hardship.

I still don't care and won't watch any of the matches. If United were involved I'm sure I'd set the DVR and fast forward to the goals. But the games themselves are dreadful. I really can't recall a single memorable moment when we were in it a few seasons ago.

The concept is great but the dominance of European teams is a massive hindrance to any suspense. And there's so much else going on in December besides football that it's hard to justify spending time watching "the club world cup" on television.

I personally would rather see the top two clubs in Europe take on the top two clubs from South America in a mano a mano competition. Two semis, then a final (plus a third place final) for all the marbles. Maybe even just every odd numbered year in the summer so you're not running into competition with the Euros or the World Cup. It will never happen, but something like that would draw massive international interest.

For some reason I also thought until a few years ago that this isn't actually a legit competition and was mainly done by the clubs because the sponsor pays big money for the clubs to play it and have his name displayed all over the place.

It's the hardest thing in club football to win.

Pretty pointless tournament given the easily global world we live in today.
Well I'd rather we were in it - it'd mean we're the Champions League holders.

If Chelsea win will they be allowed to wear their patch in the League? I seem to remember we could only wear it in Europe.

The predecessor, Intercontinental Cup, was endorsed by UEFA and CONMEBOL, so it has always been a legit competition, even if it was re-branded Toyota Cup for some time.

Winners are recognized as World Champions and though footballing wise it's not a great thing, it is a nice title to have and may have some historical value in the future. I'm certainly happy that Porto got two trophies of these.

I'm sure we had it in the League as well as Europe. What I don't remember is if we kept the badge even after losing to Barcelona in May 2009, and therefore be unable to retain it. I have a feeling we did though, just as Barcelona still wear it now.

We only wore it in Europe and we wore the badge until we weren't World Champions, i.e. until December 2009.

Obviously it's not the most important thing ever, but the fact that no other country in the world seems to have a debate about 'whether it matters' should tell you a lot.

Only English club to be champions of the world.

And the amazing thing about that, is its true for the old Inter-Continental Cup too.

Nottingham Forest Liverpool Aston Villa Liverpool Celtic Liverpool Chelsea

And for fairness, our loss.

Our wins in 1999 and 2008

The 2000 World Club Championship isnt considered a World Club Champion, but include it as a United loss or don't.
