I decided to bet on football for the first time in like 3 years and my ticket hit. I had draw on the shitty game, newcastle game and win for WH.

Well from a betting perspective, I have to flag up the Israel vs Russia game this weekend. I think English pessimism must have affected the odds, Russia are a shockingly short 1.50 (Ladbrokes) to win the game. No way in hell are they that heavy the favourites. They have the draw at 3.50, fairly stock value that, Israel to win is 6.00. You can have Russia not to win at 2.21.
My initial reason looking at the odds was to bet on Russia, that way I'd have some small crumbs of comfort should England be eliminated. But when you factor in that Russia are notoriously poor travellers, and that Israel have only lost 1 in their last 18 at home, that 6.00 is looking very good value indeed. Added bonus that Russia will need to push forward if the game is level towards the closing stages, making a breakaway Israel goal that bit more likely. I think I shall have a sneaky fiver on it anyway |

Hi all, could anybody recommend a website or a book about football betting, where I could learn about betting strategies?
I would like to get into this and would appreciate your help. |

I tend to be sceptical of "strategies" - the basic advice is to bet on singles and look for value - ie where the odds quoted don't match the probability of something happening. This tends to mean betting on results not correct scores or first goal-scorer etc etc where the odds are often poor to very poor. That said, Kevin Pullein has a column in the Guardian called Trendspotting which is worth looking back over (just search on pullein in the Guardian website for the articles).

So, what are you betting on this week-end?
I made some money last Sunday with our win against Liverpool. I'm putting Arsenal and Spurs to draw at 5/2 West Brom to win at Stoke at 6/4 Swansea to win at Carlisle at 7/4 Blackburn to draw with Chelsea at 11/5 What do you think? |

1) West Brom and Swansea I don't know enough about those games to make a more accurate book than William Hill etc. Ie no bet. 2) Arsenal. My book would look like Arsenal 1/2 Spurs 7/1 Draw 4/1. Looking at Betfair they have Arsenal 1.53/Spurs 7.8/Draw 4.4. Verdict no value . No bet. 3) Chelsea. My book would be 11/10 Chelsea 4/1 Blackburn 2/1 Draw. Betfair says 1.96 Chelsea 4.7 Blackburn 3.55 Draw. Value is probably in the draw but it's not a very attractive proposition. |
