Fuck.

Gutted for the lad, he was doing well for Sunderland before the injury.

Shame that is. Hopefully he will make a speedy recovery and reduce that by 2/3 months

Really unfortunate.

I wonder if it will increase their attempts to get Welbeck, at least on another season loan.

That's a real shame, he was just coming into some good form when he had the initial injury, needing to be out a further year is worrying, hopefully he can return without any lingering effects.

Yea. It's a shame really. I think Brucey let Bent off with also the idea that he want to play Campbell more.

I'm sure they will, and I don't think SAF would be against it, take up Owen for another season if he is happy with the role he has, much better that Welbeck plays regularly which you can't guarantee.

You can see how he has blossomed by playing more often, I think that outweighs the aspect of regular training with the United squad

The only issue I forsee is him becoming disillusioned with being loaned out again and then ultimately wanting to leave, probably best to offer him a contract extension to assure him that he is wanted at OT, but this is best for him

Thats the key part really isnt it? His pace was always he greatest attribute imo. Hopefully he'll make a full recovery.

Yes that's always the biggest concern when a player who relies on pace has knee problems. Hopefully getting this second op so soon is a case of catching things before they get any worse and will be best for his career long term.

Guy can't catch a break can he?

Early 20s are a crucial time in a footballer's development, spending 2 seasons on the sidelines at that age won't do him any favours. Ask Wes Brown about that.

Like that idea. Macheda won't have gained anything from his loan this year so he'll need another to develop most likely.

Fuck. What injury leaves you injured for that long? It's 12 months minimum. :/

The last thing mentioned was a twisted knee, however it is the same one which he tore the ligaments in earlier this season.

He could be in the England squad if he wouldn't be so unlucky with injuries.

I thought he was injured again for a year, when seeing this thread with little posts on the top. Good to see him doing well.

We didn't produce a decent striker since Hughes, now we've produced three quality young strikers in Campbell, Rossi and Welbeck. I guess they're like buses.

We didnt produce Rossi... Wasnt he 17 when he joined us?
Not sure what the cut off is, but 17 seems a bit old to claim him as ours.

Campbell had a lot of potential. Was surprised he went for just 3.5m. Actually, was a bit disappointed he was sold. Can understand why tho.

Glad he is over his injury problems. He is stronger .. doesnt look like its taken too much out of his pace either. Should grow into a very good striker.

We didn't really produce Campbell either he was signed from Huddersfield Town at around the age of 15/16 similar to Rossi (albeit from a different club obviously)

Good to see him doing so well on his return

I reckon we can say we "produced" anyone who played for our academy. Most youth products played for another club at some point. Gets messy if you start making a cut-off point at 15, 16, 17 years old.

Mine was getting someone in before they are eligible for a professional contract, ie, before 17.
At 17, they turn pro.

They sign pro contracts at a different age on the continent though. Rossi signed his first pro contract for United, didn't he?

Yep. Think its 18 in Italy.
Its fairly arbitrary, but I'm sticking to 17.
If a player is at the club for a bit and turns pro here, he's ours.
17 and older, he isnt on a youth contract at the club, he isnt our youth product.

Doesnt really matter tho.

Yeah, I suppose the criteria could be playing for us BEFORE they sign a professional contract.

Think I prefer the definition which makes our academy seem better though
