Hargreaves was decent, set Downing through with that left foot over the top ball.

Thought first half was promising, but second showed a lack of undertsnading of other players, and a distinct lack of idea's.
The most worrying thing was the lack of oppurtunities we created.

I thought Hargreaves did his job very well. Unfortunately when England went forward they lacked ideas and creativity. There was also a lack of movement up front and clear cut chances. It seems that Rooney cannot play up front on his own for England, but he can for Man Utd. I wonder why....

I think the conclusion has to be:

Carrick > Fletcher > Hargreaves > Barry > Rest of England Team.

Something we can all agree on?

Because you asked about him?

I said both Hargreaves and Barry were good and shit in equal measures tonight. Both made a few good tackles (Hargreaves more than Barry) both made a few decent passes (Barry a lot more than Hargreaves) and both had their spastic moments where they forgot how to pass the ball or that they were supposed to be trying to take the ball from the player and not the player from the ball.

Barry did more than Hargreaves on the night in my opinion but Toulalon and Makelele did more.

That was the point I was making.

The "rant" was to explain my thoughts on why lots of people rate him (as well as the many who don't) and because I saw one of the pundits on sky sports news say "England were poor but Hargreaves was fantastic."

In my opinion, Hargreaves has made his reputation in England based on these short sighted comments on his performances in games where everyone around him has been poor.

Which says a lot for his character - but not too much for his ability.

So you reckon Sir Alex bought him based on these so called short sighted comments?

Of course not. SAF bought him for what he saw in Bayern's games - something I'm not an expert on as I have said above. I can only comment on his England matches because those are the ones I've seen all of.

I only saw the first half, but Hargreaves was even poorer than usual during that, and I saw comments on here about how well he was playing. When Anelka rolled him even though he had possession of the ball, me and my brother just started laughing, but It was emabarrasing really

Gareth Barry was having a good game, and yet people were slagging him off

Fergie bought him on the basis of the World Cup IMO. A bit like Rio. Although the difference is, Rio is great, Hargreaves is not.

Even Villa fans don't think he played well. "Really off form at the moment" to quote one. Positionally and defensively terrible with not a whole lot going forward. Hargreaves played his role fairly well.

It cant have been the World Cup alone though, he must have seen at least the same level of performance while he was at Bayern else he wouldnt have stayed after him for so long.

He must have liked what he saw for Bayern also.

Nah, the World Cup had an influence, but Sir Alex would have seen him at Bayern too, as well as speaking to his mate Ottmar about him.

The radio commentators on 5live suggested Rio was injured. But he carried on playing for the last 20 minutes anyway.

People actually watching the game said he didn't look injured so it appears they were talking shite. Thankfully.

He would have seen him. But had he not been so hyped up by the media during/after the World Cup, he wouldn't have gone for him.

Yup. And who was the best defensive midfielder at the World CUp before? That's right Nicky Butt.

BUT (see what I did there?), Hargreaves played well tonight.

Thanks fuck Capello doesn't manage United though - dull dull dull stuff.

You really think Sir Alex signs players based on how hyped they are by the media?

Always said that when people have suggested him as Sir Alex's replacement.

In this case, quite possibly.

It reminded me very much of the Rio situation after World Cup 2002.

Hargreaves was the holding player. Barry was the one looking to get England playing, and he was making a half decent effort of it.

Hargreaves just did his usual Owen Hargreaves impression. Run about, foul people, take five touches to play backwards pass to defender

wasn't Poborsky signed on the back of a brilliant Euro 96?

Hargreaves is a strong marathon runner. i would love to be proven wrong, but i'm afraid i won't.
