Gerrard has also agreed to take up an ambassadorial role at Liverpool Football Club once his illustrious playing career draws to a close.
I wonder if they remembered to include a clause which allows him to choose the music at any events he attends on behalf of the club?

agree with gb. Gerrard was never at the level of Roy Keane.

Still has a lot to contibute to Liverpool. But he does seem to be injury prone recently.

It may just be a period of bad luck...but if his availablity drops for them, it would be a big loss for them.

Whatever, when fit he is a very good player.

And free tickets and backstage passes for Phil Collins concerts too.

This is bad, who to choose from between City and Pool winning the league cup? Wish they could both somehow flop and allow Crystal Palace to knick it.

Pretty much. If he wanted to leave I'm sure there'd be some interest, and rcoobc makes a good point that he could probably earn more money going to Asia or America but I think he's like Rooney in the sense that he likes life in England and doesn't really want to go abroad (or at least that's what he'd say).

Dalglish has commented on it now:

Quote:
Kenny Dalglish today spoke of his delight after Steven Gerrard put pen to paper on an extension to his Liverpool contract.

Speaking the day after watching his captain drive the Reds to within 90 minutes of the Carling Cup final with the winning goal at Manchester City, Dalglish admits today's news of a new deal is another massive boost for everybody connected with the club.

"It's fantastic for everybody," said the manager. "Over the past couple of years he's had a couple of disappointing spells where he's picked up injuries through no fault of anybody. He picked up a couple of infections which were completely unrelated. He's come back fantastically well and is starting to get himself back to full fitness.

"For us, for Steven and for everybody connected with football club it's fantastic news. We're delighted for him and are looking forward to him getting back to full fitness and working hard for us and with us."

As well as his leadership qualities on the pitch, Dalglish is also grateful for the role his captain plays behind the scenes.

"He does everything. People only see what he does on the pitch," he added. "It's the same for Carra as well who is also influential among the young players. They are two great examples for them to sit and look up to.

"Steven, being the club captain, is very impressive - if there's a problem to be sorted in the dressing room, which isn't very often, he'll deal with it and it doesn't come any further than the dressing room which is fantastic for us. It doesn't happen too often but if it happens he steps in. So he stands up to be counted on and off the pitch. He's been a fantastic servant to the football club so let's hope he gets past his present contract as well.

"He's been here since he was a very young boy. In this day and age there's not many people who go through their football career and represent just one club, especially people with quality like Steven. It's not as if he's been at a football club that's been without success either. If you're happy where you're playing, you're enjoying what you're doing and you enjoy the football club I don't see any reason to move, and it's fantastic for us that he hasn't."

And with a difficult 2011 behind him, Kenny is hoping Gerrard's early 2012 form can be repeated during the months to come.

"He's scored in two of the three games this year. If he keeps that up he'll win the Golden Boot!"
Kenny: Stevie deal is great news - Liverpool FC

Couldn't give a shite if City won the thing. Seeing Liverpool not get to Wembley for another season would be hilarious too.

Yes, he'll be forced to spend the rest of his playing days at Liverpool.

Stranger things have happened

When Liverpool won it a few years ago against Birmingham under Trevor Francis they were a division below. It went all the way to a penalty shootout. Think it was Andy Johnson who missed the crucial pen giving Pool the cup

Anything could happen, as shown by Arsenal v Birmingham last season (though Birmingham was a top flight side at the time)

Scored a beauty in a 3-1 win against United in the 2001/02 season. Also played in the 1-0 win at OT that same season - Of course, he didn't always come out on top. But considering the differing levels of quality amongst the 3 sides, that's hardly surprising really. But to say that Keane & Vieira 'bullied' Gerrard on a regular basis, is selective memory at best, laughable at worse.
Typical...I bet you don't remember his abject perfomance in midfield costing you 3 goals in a champions league final. Until Rafa Benitez has the good sense to bring on Hamann in that position at half time and push him upfront. A game that was the perfect example of what shit central midfielder Gerard has always been.

Great player; criminally underrated here. Had he played for United we'd probably consider him equal to Rooney.

Bringing some belief and spirit back into a shit Liverpool team, not exactly something that's easy to do.

As shown by this amazing post here: Football 365's top 10 managers of 2011

Birmingham actually had a pretty decent 2011 as well, getting more points than either of the other sides that went down.

Yeah, they did. When the actual match happened, I don't think that many would have been surprised if Birmingham did win it, though I don't know whether that says more about Birmingham or Arsenal.

Arsenal were having a great season until that match including beating Barcelona. And then in the space of a couple of weeks they lost the Carling Cup, got knocked out of the Champions League and the FA Cup.

I think Red Indian believe Gerrard has only ever looked good when played further forward.

He is wrong of course.

Gerrard has looked good both as a supporting forward and in midfield

All Gerard's best seasons as a player to date have come with him employed as a second striker and a right winger. It isnt a coincidence.

Gerrard was never a shit central midfielder. He was, however, inconsistent there. He'd be brilliant one game, dominating the central area and virtually dragging Liverpool kicking and screaming to the win. The very next match he'd have hollywood balls flying all over the place, getting caught out of position, and actually be hurting his teams chances of playing as a team.

He was certainly best when pushed further forward than those central two (either on the wing or second striker), but saying he was a shit midfielder is going a bit too far. I've always wondered what kind of midfielder he could've turned into if he was at a better team where he could rely on his team-mates doing their job. Perhaps he would've been more disciplined in that situation, instead of the 'must force everything to happen when I want' that he often is at Liverpool.

His big problem was always his inability to control the tempo (from center mid), whether that would have come with experience or not, who knows?

Too old know to get the knack of it now, I'd imagine.

No. He was shit there. People just loved his all action style so much, without ever caring about how positionally senseless he was in the role. The few times he'd shine in that role was because of his amazing engine and leadership powers rather than because he was bringing genuine quality to the role.

The difference between him as a pure central midfielder and him as either a traditional all out attacking midfielder or support forward is too huge in terms of consistent quality to just put it down to inconsistency on his part in a deeper role.

I really hate that excuse. This is a fellow who played alongside men like Sissoko and Hamman, two of the better defensive mdifelders on the planet. Even Xabi Alonso and later Mascherano. Yet he never ever proved a consistently quality partner for any of them. On top of looking plain lost at times the way he almost always looked alongside Lampard for England.

He has always looked constrained and caged in playing in center midfield. Yet in a freer attacking midfield role he was always one of the best a round. Still is. He has simply never been a quality central midfielder. He is the embodiment of an all action trequartista.
